Former Indian keeper-batsman Kiran More has earmarked India to have a split-captaincy situation in the very near future. Today, most nations have resorted to a split-captaincy approach to combat the pressure of the international cricket schedules, with India and New Zealand amongst the top-tier teams having one skipper to lead across formats. Kiran More expects Rohit Sharma to captain in one of the versions quite soon.

The split-captaincy approach has been one of the most talked-about topics in recent times. Several experts have backed Rohit Sharma to take charge of the Indian team in white-ball cricket, having tasted success as a captain in the IPL. Rohit is the most successful captain in the IPL, leading Mumbai Indians to five titles in seven years. However, while Virat Kohli has done exceptionally well as a leader, some of his decisions in the crunch moments have come under criticism.

Kiran More, who is with the Mumbai Indians as a talent scout, believes that the vision of the board decides such things and predicts Rohit Sharma to captain the national team soon. More feels that having spent a significant part of his career under MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli might see the need to share the responsibilities as well. He understands things taking a turn in these directions after the upcoming England tour.

“I think the vision of the board drives these things. I believe Rohit Sharma will get a chance soon. Virat Kohli is a shrewd captain who played under MS Dhoni. How long he wants to captain the ODIs and T20s, he will also think. You will learn a lot more about these decisions after the England tour,” More told India TV.

Unlike several experts, Kiran More thinks a split-captaincy approach should work in India and feels senior players’ thought process about the future is crucial. The 58-year old lauded Virat Kohli for doing well as a captain and with the bat; however, he believes it is not as easy as it sounds. He predicts Kohli to give up the captaincy of one of the formats soon and pave the way for Rohit Sharma to take over.

“It [Split captaincy] can work in India. What the senior players think about the Indian team’s future is very important. With Virat Kohli, captaining three teams isn’t that easy plus he has to perform as well. And I give him the credit for it because performing in every format while captaining and winning… but, I think there will be a time when Virat Kohli will say ‘Now it’s enough, let Rohit lead the side,” he added.
