The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) found themselves in the middle of a storm after a social media post aimed at engaging fans backfired spectacularly.

The franchise shared a picture of Varun Chakravarthy with the IPL trophy and asked followers to pick their favorite “Mystery Man” moment in purple and gold.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) already hinted about their game against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by mentioning a yellow heart in the caption—the color denotes the five-time IPL champions.

MS Dhoni fans slam KKR over social media stunt

Sharing Varun Chakravarthy’s picture with his family on X, the KKR wrote, “Your favorite mystery-man moment in purple and gold? 💜💛 The replies section is all yours, #KnightsArmy 👇.”

But things took an unexpected turn when a fan shared the clip from IPL 2020 where Varun Chakravarthy bowled out MS Dhoni, and he captioned it, “Varun’s best spells vs MSD 💛💜.”

They also jumped into the discussion, as they replied cheekily by saying, “Thala vs Thalapathy.”

The wordplay didn’t sit well with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans, who saw it as a dig at the legendary MS Dhoni, who won five IPL trophies as captain in yellow.

Within minutes, the comment section was flooded with angry reactions, with CSK fans accusing KKR of showing disrespect to the legendary wicketkeeper-batter on social media.

How Varun Chakravarthy clean bowled MS Dhoni

Speaking about that moment from the IPL 2020, Varun Chakravarthy had clean bowled MS Dhoni during the clash between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on October 7.

The mystery spinner delivered a clever, slower variation, almost like a leg-cutter, and the CSK legend went for a big swing across the line. But the ball sneaked past Dhoni's inside edge and crashed into the middle stump. He walked out of the ground after making 11 runs for 12 balls against KKR.

In that match, Chennai Super Kings had suffered a 10-wicket loss to the Kolkata Knight in Abu Dhabi. And in the end, the Mumbai Indians were eventually crowned the champions under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. The MI had crushed the Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets in the IPL 2020 final in Dubai.

MS Dhoni is set for his IPL retirement

On the other hand, CSK had failed to progress to the playoffs in the 2020 season, finishing as the second-to-last side in the tournament with only six wins from 14 games under Dhoni. He had scored only 200 runs in 14 games at an average of 25.00 and a strike rate of 116.27.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Super Kings icon is reportedly set to call time on his extraordinary journey after the IPL 2026. It is being said that the next season will be Dhoni’s last dance as a player in the IPL. The 44-year-old has fought through injuries and even undergone knee surgery in 2023, but his passion for the game has kept him pushing forward.
