Kolkata Knight Riders came into this year's tournament as the defending IPL champions under the captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane, and the fans had a lot of expectations from the three-time winners.

Although Kolkata Knight Riders kicked off the 18th season with a loss against RCB in the opening match of the tournament, fans hoped that the team would make a strong comeback.

The Men in Purple and Gold did bounce back but were not able to sustain the momentum on their side and lost their way in the middle of the tournament.

The Anjinkya Rahane-led side couldn't string together a bunch of wins on the trot and found themself languishing in the bottom half of the table.

It was a peculiar season for Kolkata Knight Riders in the sense that they looked like a well-rounded unit in one game and were all over the place in the next.

According to the experts, one of the reasons for KKR's poor run in the season gone by was the instability in the batting order.

Kolkata Knight Riders went through rigorous changes as far as its middle order is concerned, which did not go well in terms of the results.

The only stability KKR had was at the top of the order with Sunil Narine and Rahmanullah Gurbaz opening the innings, who replaced Quinton de Kock after a few low scores.

The shuffling started from number three and went right till number nine with Angkrish Raghuvanshi, a middle-order batter batting at number nine in a match.

Other than Raghuvnashi, it was the team's vice-captain, Venkatesh Iyer, who was dropped from the side in the middle of the tournament.

Another decision for which KKR faced heavy criticism was the batting position of Rinku Singh, who batted at number seven in the majority of the games.

One of KKR's highly backed players, Andre Russell, also disappointed, especially with the bat, and was not used with the ball that often.

Caotain Ajinkya Rahane, however, tried his best with the bat but appeared quite timid as a leader on the field.

As far as Kolkata's bowling is concerned, the bowlers did a fine job throughout the tournament, barring a match or two.

The likes of Harshit Rana, Sunil Narine, and Varun Chakravarthy bowled well and picked up wickets for them, with Andre Russell chipping in with an over or two.

KKR would be disappointed by the way they used their third fast bowling option, which included the likes of Anrich Nortje and Spencer Johnson.
