Former Indian opener-turned commentator Aakash Chopra feels that the duo of KL Rahul and Shubman Gill will most definitely get a chance in the upcoming Boxing Day Test against Australia.

Following India’s nightmarish outing in the second innings of the pink ball Test at the Adelaide where they suffered the ignominy of registering their lowest-ever Test total, speculations have been rife that the management might make wholesale changes in the batting-unit.

With Prithvi Shaw woefully out of form and short of confidence and Virat Kohli unavailable for the rest of the series, Aakash Chopra feels that the duo of KL Rahul and Shubman Gill will replace Shaw and Kohli for the Boxing Day Test.

“It looks like Prithvi Shaw is not going to get a chance in the second match. And I can totally understand because he has not scored the runs, and his confidence is down. If the team says it is short-term and, it doesn’t mean he will not be considered in the future, they can definitely do that. They should play someone who is in the right mental space and who they feel can provide a good start,” Aakash Chopra said on his Facebook video.

On his choice for Mayank Agarwal’s opening partner between debutant Gill and discarded Test opener KL Rahul, Aakash Chopra went with the latter. He, however, admitted that the team-management might do the reverse and slit in Shubman Gill at the top of the order and KL Rahul at No. 5 or 6.

Chopra signed off by saying that whoever opens the innings with Agarwal will eventually make way for Rohit Sharma, who is set to make a comeback to the team from the New Year Test.

“My vote is with KL Rahul, but they are likely to go with Shubman Gill.” But whether you open with KL Rahul or Shubman Gill, the sword will be hanging over their head as Rohit Sharma will be back for the next Test,” Aakash Chopra added.
