This is how the incident took place
After winning the toss, India captain Shubman Gill chose to bat first. It was a predictable call made by the skipper as the track in Galle was expected to be a spinner-friendly surface. The Indian cricket team started things in a promising way with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the openers. Jaiswal started to play his natural game in an aggressive manner while Rahul was playing a holding role from the opposite end. For the opening stand, India got a 47 runs with Jaiswal scoring 32 runs from 37 balls with five boundaries.
The incident took place in the 10th over of the second innings when KL Rahul swept a ball off the Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya. The ball hit Nishan Fernando's helmet and deflected towards the short fine leg area. Match puased immidielty as all of the players, including the Indian batters and the umpire on the ground, went to check the fielder. On a good note, Nishan was standing on his feet. He was in visible pain and discomfort but not lying on his back on the ground.
Watch the moment when the ball hit the helmet of the fielder:
KL Rahul swept hard, and the ball struck the Sri Lankan player hard. He has gone off the field and has been taken to the hospital for a medical check-up. Hope he recovers soon. 💔
