South African women’s cricket team batter Lizelle Lee was named as the ICC Women’s ODI cricketer of the year, a format in which she finished as the top scorer in 2021.

Lee amassed 632 runs in 11 matches at a stunning average of 90.28, including one century and five fifties. She started off poorly with a duck against Pakistan but turned things around during their tour of India.

I have no words, to be honest. I didn’t expect this. It’s a privilege just to be nominated. Think this award could have gone to anyone so I’m privileged and honoured to be awarded this,” Lee said while accepting the award.

Lee ended as the top-scorer in the 5-match ODI series against India, scoring 288 runs including a career-best high score of 132* off 131 balls in the rain-hit third ODI. South Africa went on to crush the hosts 4-1 with Lee deservedly winning the player of the series award.

It’s amazing. There are so many people I can give credit to. There are a lot of people who played a role in this. My parents, my wife, I have to give credit to the coaching staff and my teammates,” Lee mentioned.

She also termed the century against India as probably one of the best moments along with her knock in West Indies in tough conditions.
