Former Sri Lanka cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan lashed out at Team Sri Lanka for their poor performance in the ICC World Cup 2023. He said that the players didn’t take responsibility at all and they needed to look themselves in the mirror and see what they did wrong.

Sri Lanka were one of the biggest disappointments in the ICC World Cup 2023. They struggled all throughout the tournament and were among the teams who had to face an early exit.

Sri Lanka were jolted by the massive blows even before the tournament started. Some of the key players were ruled out of the tournament due to injuries and the effect of that was visible in the World Cup. The island nation managed just two wins in the tournament and lost 7 games.

Not only this but there were a lot of issues inside the cricketing system. Things were not good inside the SLC and even players blamed them for the poor performances they put in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Muttiah Muralitharan highlighted Sri Lanka’s poor performances in the tournament and said that players didn’t take responsibility. He pointed out that the team didn’t win even 20% of the games and added that rather than blaming the board they should look at what went wrong for them. Speaking to Sportskeeda, Muttiah Muralitharan explained:

“They played badly. I would say they didn’t take the responsibility. Once you are on the field, the players need to take responsibility. Coaches can say so many things. They can draw tactics and everything. At the end of the day, you [players] make the play.”

“We won not even 20 percent matches, so that’s a poor performance. They have to go back and see what went wrong – how can I develop my skills? So those are the things rather than pointing out the administrator, coaches and other things. First, look at the mirror and see what you did wrong.”

For the last 10 years, our performance has been dipping – Muttiah Muralitharan

Muttiah Muralitharan highlighted that Sri Lanka’s performances for the last 10 years have been dipping and no one is taking responsibility. He pointed out that players need to start believing in themselves. Muttiah Muralitharan added:

“For the last 10 years, our performance has been dipping because the players won’t take ownership. The blame game is going on – because of him, because of that. Ifs and buts are not going to work for you. They have to start believing in themselves to start competing with other cricketers in the world. We have to put these things to young cricketers’ minds.”

The entire Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) was recently banned by the ICC. It remains to be seen what will be the roadmap ahead for the Sri Lanka team.
