PC: Cricket Ireland

Cricket Ireland announces their squad for the upcoming T20Is against India. Ireland will host India for a two-match T20I series in Belfast. Ahead of the contest, they have named their new captain in the format, replacing Paul Stirling.

Lorcan Tucker has been named as the skipper of the team for the upcoming series.

Multiple stars are left behind because of injury concerns

The selection is hit by multiple injury and fitness related issues, the the cricket governing of Ireland had to left out some of their top talents like Josh Little (stress fracture), Mark Adair (rectus muscle tear), Paul Stirling (torn calf muscle), Curtis Campher (hand fracture), Barry McCarthy (complete ACL tear), Jordan Neill (shoulder and foot injury), out of the squad.

Because of multiple absences, multiple youngsters are called to join the national camp. Jai Moondra, Matthew Hollard, and Reuben Wilson are the three uncapped players who have joined the team.

I look back with admiration- Lorcan Tucker on being Ireland captain

The top-order batter of the Ireland cricket team has acted as a stand-in captain twice in their career after making his debut for the national side in 2016. Tucker has gained leadership experiences in domestic cricket too, with his Inter-Provincial side, Leinster Lightning.

“It’s obviously a great privilege, and not one I thought would arrive when I started my career all those years ago. There’s a feeling of responsibility to the playing group and organisation to represent them well, and also to all the other captains who came before me."

"I look back with admiration at all the captains that have led Ireland in the past and am proud to now join them,” Lorcan Tucker, the newly appointed captain, said after today’s training.

The newly appointed skipper explains his approach as the captain of the side

Lorcan Tucker, who has prior captaincy experience, says he will try to get the best from his teammates and, as the team's leader, set an example himself first.

“My approach to the captaincy is to lead from within and by example. I’d like to think I have good relationships with all the staff and players and can act with honesty and empathy. I feel like it’s my job to bring the best out of them and allow them to do amazing things for themselves and us as a team,” he said while he was asked to explain his approach as the captain of the national cricket team.

Among the newcomers, Matthew Hollard and Jai Moondra have received their first call-ups to the senior camp, while Reuben Wilson, who is uncapped in T20I cricket, made his Test debut last month against New Zealand.

"We can’t disguise the fact that we’re hampered by injury at present, with at least five first-team regulars missing due to injury. However, my view in such circumstances is that one player’s misfortune is another player's opportunity. As such, we’ve named three uncapped players in the squad of 14," National Men’s Selector Andrew White said.
