Losing South Africa Series Means End Of Test Captaincy For Virat Kohli? Salman Butt Answers
Former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt believes removing Test skipper, Virat Kohli, from the captaincy role after just one series loss would mean a clear fight between the board and the 32-year-old.
Kohli has already been removed from ODI captaincy due to his ineffectiveness in ICC tournaments. Rohit Sharma has been made the captain and he now decides the teams for both T20I and ODI.
Although the decision to remove him from ODI captaincy was justified, Kohli is comfortably India’s best-ever captain in Tests and perhaps is very likely in the top-5 Test captains of all time. If a loss in South Africa is what it takes for BCCI to remove him from Test captaincy as well, it might end up being a huge scandal in Indian cricket.
“I can’t say whether it will happen or not” – Salman Butt
Clearly, the majority of fans who follow cricket know how well Kohli marshalls his troops in the longest format. Dethroning him would perhaps be the biggest mistake that BCCI has ever made. Speaking about the same, Butt said:
“I don’t think it should happen; it won’t be of any benefit. But, I can’t say whether it will happen or not. If it happens, it will be clear that there is tension between them and that they are not getting along very well.”
“There can’t be any other reason to snatch the captaincy away from a captain who has won the most number of matches abroad among all other Indian skippers. One series shouldn’t affect his captaincy.
“I don’t think it will happen and the lesser they happen, the better. And if they happen often, then that’s harmful for cricket,” Butt mentioned on his YouTube channel.
Ever since taking over from MS Dhoni in Tests, Kohli has taken the team from No.7 to No.1 in a short while. They are currently the best overseas touring team and a win in South Africa will solidify their spot at the top.
