The Sri Lanka Cricket (SCL) has announced that the sixth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will be played from the 27th of November later this year.
Since the initiation of franchise-level cricket tournaments and T20 global leagues around the world, Sri Lanka also started a similar competition, just like the Indian Premier League, with several franchises participating in the league games played in the T20 format.
Though the Indian Premier League holds a much longer legacy in the world of cricket, the Lanka Premier League was started in 2020.
Sixth edition of LPL announced
Sri Lanka Cricket has announced the dates for the upcoming edition of the Lanka Premier League; this will mark the sixth edition of the competition.
The 2025 edition will be played between five teams and will be featured in the window between November 27th and the 23rd of December. Just like the IPL, the LPL is also a fine blend between homegrown talents and seasoned national professionals.
The LP tournament director, Samantha Dodanwela, explained that the LPL was planned in accordance with the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. The Lankan players will be getting some exquisite T20 action before the home ICC tournament, which they will co-host alongside India.
“The idea to conduct the LPL during this timeframe is aimed at aligning the tournament with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026,” stated Dodanwela, in an SLC press release on Friday.

Sri Lanka to start Asia Cup 2025 as defending champions
The Asia Cup 2025 has finally been announced after much confusion between the participating sides, especially between Pakistan and India. However, it was on the buzz that Sri Lanka had secretly supported India's claims, one of which openly included the opposition of the Annual General Meeting of the Asian Cricket Council.
However, after much dilemma, the Asia Cup has got a green signal and will be played from the 9th of September in the UAE, with India retaining the rights of official hosts. The tournament is likely to feature a total of 8 teams divided into two groups.
Sri Lanka is placed in the same group alongside Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong. Recently, Hong Kong appointed former Sri Lankan national Kaushal Silva as their head coach ahead of the tournament.
Going back to 2022, when the Asia Cup was played in the shortest format of the game, Sri Lanka played their final against Pakistan and claimed the title, which they will defend this time. India won the 2023 ODI Asia Cup in the final against Sri Lanka.
