Maheesh Theekshana, the mystery spinner has been promoted to the Rank of Sergeant in the Sri Lankan Army by Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage. The 22-year-old spinner who was quite instrumental in the team’s success in the recently concluded Asia Cup has been promoted on the grounds of exceptional sporting achievement.
The spinner would be thrilled as this rank is considered to be quite prestigious in Sri Lanka. The spinner knows that he is quite young at the International Arena as he made his debut last year. It would be interesting to see how the 2022 T20 World Cup unfolds for him where spin won’t be a huge factor as pitches in Australia aren’t that spin friendly.
Asia Cup Triumph for Sri Lanka
Maheesh Theekshana was playing in his maiden Asia Cup 2022. He was quite good with the run rate as he took 6 wickets in 6 matches. The spinner has shown that he can be a vital cog for the Island nation. It won’t be wrong to say that the spinner is quite mature and Sri Lanka Selectors would be hoping that he continues the good work.
We have seen in the past that spinners like Suraj Randiv, Senanayake and a lot of other spinners got faded away with time. Skipper Dasun Shanaka & Head Coach Chris Silverwood will have a task on their hands to make sure that they back spinners in tough times.
Steep Challenge ahead for Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka would be aware that they are going to play Qualifiers for ICC T20 World Cup 2022. The conditions in Australia would be very different as compared to sub-continental where there would be bounce and pace. In those conditions playing with 3 spinners won’t be a feasible option.
The team would be hopeful that Chameera & Kumara are back as they are the prime fast bowlers of the team. The role of all-rounders become extremely important as we have seen that all-rounders win key moments & championships. It won’t be a surprise if Dasun Shanaka promotes himself the order to up the ante.
