Indian batsman and Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary has termed Kolkata Knight Riders mid-season captaincy change from Dinesh Karthik to Eoin Morgan during IPL 2020 as ‘unfair’. Dinesh Karthik decided to step down from the captaincy of KKR and handed over the reins to England captain Eoin Morgan in the halfway of the tournament which raised a lot of eyebrows.
Morgan failed to get the team into the playoffs after taking over as captain in the short run but showed that he has what it takes to win the trophy for his side. The captaincy change meant that Dinesh Karthik could concentrate on his batting after having a poor run last season. Karthik and Russell play an important role for the Kolkata team and a lot of responsibilities lies on the shoulders of these two finishers in the upcoming season.
Tiwary Purplexed By Karthik’s Decision
Tiwary said in an interview about the importance of a captain continuing until the season end after being giving a responsibility. He told that it isn’t normal for a captain to step out to the owners and resign from captaincy to concentrate on batting and was surprised by Karthik’s Decision.
“In the middle of the season, you don’t want to drop your captain because you have given him [Dinesh Karthik] a responsibility. I don’t know what’s the story from the other side. [But] we don’t normally get to hear that the captain wants to resign and he’s the one to come to the owners and say ‘I don’t want to lead further because I want to concentrate on the batting,'” Manoj Tiwary told Sportskeeda.
Tiwary Feels Karthik Built The Team
Manoj Tiwary mentioned about Dinesh Karthik building the team from the auction and to give the credit to the new captain in the middle of the tournament was being unfair. He admitted that he doesn’t know the reason behind the move from the franchise but stated that the complete scenario doesn’t look fair.
“I don’t know what were the reasons but I don’t endorse any franchise dropping the captain in the middle of the tournament. You have given him that opportunity, he has built the team from the auction table itself. It’s unfair to him and also to the other [player, Eoin Morgan] as well who was not part of the auction table and team building and eventually, you are giving him the responsibility of captaincy,” Manoj Tiwary opined.
“Also, the management and owner want the team to perform well under the next captain with the players the previous captain has built the team with. So it’s unfair in the complete scenario,” he added.
Manoj Tiwary has played for Kolkata under Gautam Gambhir and was part of the winning campaign in 2012
