Mark Wood, on Friday (July 19), announced his arrival in England's Test team in a stunning fashion as he hit the ground running in the ongoing second Test against West Indies at Trent Bridge.

The right-arm pacer was not a part of England's squad for the first Test as the management wanted him to take his time to return to the Test team after playing in the T20 World Cup just a few days ago. In his absence, James Anderson, Chris Woakes, and Gus Atkinson were the fast-bowling options for England in the first Test.

With Anderson retiring, Mark Wood was finally recalled to the Test squad for the ongoing second Test and was included straightaway in the playing XI as well. And the England star made a rapid return to red-ball cricket, clocking all the deliveries of his first over well above 90 mph.

Woakes and Atkinson opened the bowling for England and bowled the first 9 overs before captain Ben Stokes introduced Mark Wood into the attack. The fast-bowler could not pick up a wicket in his first over of the game but did enough to leave the cricketing world mighty impressed:

Mark Wood's rapid return:

All the six deliveries of the first over from Mark Wood were clocked at more than 92mph. The first ball was clocked at 93.9 mph and opener Mikyle Louis managed to get two runs off it. The next ball was a thunderbolt with the speed gun showing 96.1mph. However, that was not even the fastest delivery of the over as Wood went on to bowl one at 96.5mph.

By the time the over came to an end, Wood broke the record for bowling the fastest over by an England bowler at home since the records began. Well, the record lasted barely a few minutes as Wood himself went on to shatter the record by bowling a faster third over. All the deliveries in the third over were clocked at over 93 mph while one delivery even touched the 97mph mark.

Talking about the game, West Indies made a good start with the bat with openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Louis adding 53 runs for the first wicket. Shoaib Bashir broke the stand by dismissing Louis for 21. At the time of writing this report, West Indies were on 74 for 1 in reply to England's first innings total of 416.
