Australian cricket legend Matthew Hayden has delivered a hard-hitting reality check to his former Chennai Super Kings teammate MS Dhoni after his series of poor batting performances in the ongoing IPL 2025. Hayden said that MS Dhoni’s time on the field might be over.

The blistering remarks of the former Chennai Super Kings opener and coach came after Dhoni’s sluggish performance in the five-time champions’ 25-run defeat to Delhi Capitals in the 17th match of the ongoing IPL 2025 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, April 5.

Matthew Hayden drops retirement bomb for MS Dhoni

Chasing a target of 184, CSK had a terrible start, and then Dhoni stabilized the innings with Vijay Shankar and remained unbeaten on 30 runs from 26 balls. But he played six dot balls and couldn’t lift the scoring rate when it mattered most, and CSK eventually fell 25 runs short of the target.

His go-slow approach in the final overs drew a lot of criticism from fans and experts, as he is known as one of the greatest finishers the game has ever seen. Meanwhile, Hayden, who was part of the commentary team during the game, was not really happy with Dhoni’s performance.

While speaking on-air, the former CSK player has suggested that Dhoni should consider retiring from the game and instead join the commentary team. Hayden said that Dhoni has lost his cricketing edge and should accept this before it becomes too late for the franchise.

MS Dhoni should join us in our commentary box: Matthew Hayden

According to cricket.com, he said, “(MS) Dhoni should join us in our commentary box after this game. He has lost the cricket. It's over for him. He should accept this fact until it's too late for CSK.”

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni’s IPL 2025 campaign has not started the way fans would’ve hoped. While the legendary cricketer remains a massive crowd-puller, his impact with the bat so far has been far from disappointing for the CSK.

In four matches, Dhoni has scored 0* against Mumbai Indians, 30* versus RCB, 16 against Rajasthan Royals, and 30* in the recent game against Delhi Capitals.

MS Dhoni's batting position and performance are under the scanner in the IPL 2025

The former CSK skipper’s performances have sparked plenty of debate, especially after he walked out to bat at No. 9 in their IPL 2025 season opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Many were baffled by the move, with questions raised over why he came in so late in the innings.

However, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming came forward to clear the air. Fleming revealed that Dhoni is still not at full fitness following knee surgery, and that’s why they couldn’t find the right batting position for the former Indian captain in the tournament.

The head coach also played down the retirement talks. Fleming said in the post-match press conference, "I don't even ask these days. You guys are the ones that ask (about retirement).”
