Sydney Sixers have been one of the most successful franchises in the Big Bash League (BBL). They have appointed Matthew Mott as their new head coach for the next season. The announcement comes very soon after the sudden departure of former Australia all-rounder James Hopes, who joined Queensland, as he also leaves the WBBL position.
However, the franchise is yet to fill the women’s head coach position. As per Cricinfo reports, the position will be filled later this week. Matthew Mott previously served as the assistant coach of the franchise, and now he is the Sixers' third head coach this year after Hopes initially replaced Greg Shipperd.
Matthew Mott's record as a head coach
Matthew Mott has signed a two-year deal with the franchise. He joined the WBBL as head coach last year, with the franchise wanting him to take over the role of BBL head coach as well, but ultimately decided to keep the men's and women's teams under separate head coaches.
Matthew Mott was the former coach of the Australian Women's Cricket Team, winning consecutive T20 World Cup titles, the ODI World Cup 2022, and four Ashes series victories.
Mott also previously coached the England men's white-ball cricket team and helped the side to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup. He has a good record as a head coach and will look to bring back glory for the Sydney Sixers.
Rachael Haynes shares Sydney Sixers plan for upcoming BBL and WBBL
Rachael Haynes, the general manager of the Sydney Sixers, is happy to have appointed Matthew Mott as the head coach, and she is looking for separate head coaches for BBL and WBBL, as the windows will shift each season to have stability in both teams and tournaments.
"With the potential for the BBL and WBBL windows to shift each season, we have appointed separate head coaches for each team to ensure continuity and long-term stability across both programs," Rachael Haynes said.
"While we considered Matthew's ability to lead both programs, we've taken a long-term view to ensure consistent and stable leadership across both teams. The strength of the candidate we have appointed as WBBL head coach gave us confidence that this was the right move for both programs, and we look forward to announcing that news in the coming days."

Mott, after being appointed as the head coach, is happy and excited to have the role, as he states that he has been a part of this franchise for a long time and this team has a long history of winning trophies, and he looks forward to winning more trophies and successful seasons.
