India’s newest pace sensation, Mayank Yadav, is currently undergoing a rigorous rehabilitation program at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, and he is close to regaining his full fitness.

However, the BCCI is not in a hurry to rush the uncapped pacer back into action. His promising stint with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL 2024 was cut short due to a side strain followed by an abdominal tear. However, the emerging pace bowler managed to make a notable impact in just a few games with his ability to consistently bowl above 150 kmph.

BCCI likely to take cautious approach for Mayank Yadav's India debut

Recognizing his exceptional pace and control, the BCCI has included Mayank on the Pace Bowling Contract list. However, the LSG pacer missed out on a maiden call-up for India’s ongoing tour of Zimbabwe due to his injury, but he could get the opportunity to make his international debut in the upcoming white-ball series in Sri Lanka if he regains full fitness in time.

But, given his history of injuries, Indian selectors are cautious about rushing Mayank into the international arena. Actually, the BCCI is planning to give Mayank some time in domestic cricket to prepare him for future challenges. He represents Delhi in domestic cricket and is likely to play in the upcoming Duleep Trophy before being considered for India's selection.

If the reports are to be believed, Mayank will not be picked for the upcoming T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka, with the BCCI already mulling over resting senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming 50-over assignment. Notably, Kohli and Rohit already retired from T20I cricket last month.

BCCI keeps close watch on Mayank Yadav’s recovery

It is being said that if the young pacer managed to impress in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, he might be considered for the home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. India will be hosting Bangladesh in a two-match Test series in September, followed by a three-match Test series against New Zealand in October.

A BCCI official was quoted as saying by Telegraph India: “A young fast bowler like Mayank needs to be given the necessary amount of time to first cope with the needs of the different formats. So, he’s still being closely monitored. If he’s rushed into the Indian team, it’s a risk, as that could lead to a breakdown.”

He added, “So, if needed, getting him ready for India could also begin next year. However, if he plays in the Duleep Trophy and does well, he may also be considered for the coming home series (against Bangladesh and New Zealand).”

On the other hand, Yadav said that his recovery program went very well, and he feels much better and fitter now. The youngster said that he will have to spend more time at the NCA, but he has been bowling with the full run-up and a lot of intensity over the past few days.
