Continuing his red-hot form with the bat, David Warner, on Saturday (October 28), gave Australia a flying start in the ongoing game against New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.

Australia made one change to their playing eleven for the game. They brought in Travis Head in place of allrounder Cameron Green. The left-handed batsman could not play in the first five World Cup games due to a fractured thumb. New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first, hoping to get some assistance for the fast bowlers early in the day.

But it did not take them long to regret the decision as David Warner and Travis Head took them to the cleaners. The Australia openers came out all guns blazing to leave their Trans-Tasman rivals stunned. David Warner set the tone by hitting Matt Henry for two fours in the very first over. In the third over, he hit the same bowler for a six before Head hit him for two more sixes as Australia collected 22 runs from the over.

In the fourth over of the innings, David Warner targeted Trent Boult and hit him for a four and a six. The five-time world champions reached fifty in just the fifth over. Both the openers matched each other shot for shot to put their team in the driver’s seat.

Cricket world hails David Warner:

David Warner reached his fifty in the 8th over off just 28 balls after he hit Boult for another six before taking a single. The Australia opener would be eyeing yet another century in the ongoing World Cup after the solid start with the bat.

He came in this game on the back of centuries in his last two innings against Pakistan and the Netherlands. As David Warner was heading towards another century, the cricket world heaped praise on him.

Here are some of the reactions:

By the time the first powerplay came to an end, Australia had raced away to 118 for no loss. It is the highest score in the powerplay in the ongoing World Cup, surpassing the 94 runs India had scored against Afghanistan. 118 is also Australia’s highest-ever score in the powerplay and third-highest overall.
