Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) fired one member and suspended two others for long terms for their scuffle with Australian players during the Lord’s Test of Ashes 2023.
During the 2nd Test between England and Australia in Ashes 2023 at Lord’s, Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal caused a huge controversy. As he was dismissed by Alex Carey, many spectators slammed the Australian team for unfair play.
After the incident, three MCC members abused Australian players in the Lord’s Long Room. Australian players also engaged in heated altercations with MCC members over the matter. Cricket Australia also reported the matter to Marylebone Cricket Club later.

MCC had issued unreserved apologies to the Australia team earlier and also suspended three members with immediate effect pending an investigation. Now, MCC has expelled one member and suspended two others after the investigation.
“The actions of the three individuals in the Pavilion on the day in question fell well below the behaviour expected from our Members. The penalties set out above are the consequences of breaching the Club’s Code of Conduct,” an official statement from Marylebone Cricket Club read.
While MCC did not reveal the names of the members, they found all three members guilty of ‘abusive, offensive or inappropriate behaviour or language’. As a result, they fired one member and suspended two others. One member was suspended for four-and-a-half and while another faced a suspension of two-and-a-half years.
On Day 5 of Lord’s Test of Ashes 2023, Alex Carey dismissed Jonny Bairstow with stumping as the latter wandered out of his crease after leaving the delivery. Australia appealed for out and the third umpired adjudged Bairtow as out.
However, the event caused a lot of controversy in the cricket fraternity. It became one of the highlights of Ashes 2023. Even Bairstow had a heated altercation with Australian players in the changing room after his dismissal. England ultimately lost the match by 43 runs. Later, they levelled the Ashes 2023 series 2-2 but Australia managed to retain the trophy.
