Cricket Australia picked a full-strength women’s team for the Commonwealth Games, which will be held this year in Birmingham. Ellyse Perry is expected to play as a batter after recovering from a stress fracture in her lower back.
At the Birmingham Games, women’s T20 cricket will make an appearance, with Australia facing Barbados, India, and Pakistan in Group A.
After the pool rounds, the semi-finals will be held, followed by bronze and gold medal games. On the eve of the Games, the 15 players selected to represent Australia in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will compete in a Tri-Series in Northern Ireland against Ireland and Pakistan.
Beerworth stated of all-rounder Ellyse Perry’s fitness: “Ellyse is anticipated to return to the lineup as a batsman after recovering from a stress fracture in her lower back. Her bowling availability will be determined by her improvement in the coming weeks and medical guidance.”
‘The Commonwealth Games are Hugely important’: Shawn Flegler
In an official statement, Shawn Flegler, Australia’s Head of Performance (Women’s Cricket) and National Selector, said: “The focus now shifts to the T20 game, with two significant competitions on the horizon: the Commonwealth Games and the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.”
“We’ve been concentrating on working to develop players that play across formats because the team’s style of play has remained reasonably constant over the last couple of years, in both T20 and 50-over formats; it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to keep the same group of players who performed so well at the World Cup.”
