Mumbai Indians (MI) have made some surprising calls heading into the IPL 2024 auction. First, they traded Hardik Pandya back into the team with an all-cash deal from Gujarat Titans. Secondly, they named him, the captain of the side ahead of the season by removing Rohit Sharma from the post.
Rohit Sharma was synonymous with the success story of Mumbai Indians. Since taking up captaincy in 2013, he won five IPL titles for the franchise. MI won titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 under Rohit. With Hardik Pandya now set to lead the team, it will be interesting to see the changes that he brings into the team and the template that he sets for his fellow teammates to follow.
Under Rohit’s leadership, many of the players bloomed in Mumbai Indians’s colours and went on to represent India. Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah are the two moet eminent names to do so. Later Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma also achieved great success in Indian colors.
Reports said that the appointment of Hardik as captaincy was a decision made for a long-term purpose. But the entire rationale behind him leaving the franchise leading a new team and coming back to the Mumbai Indians franchise is something that the cricket experts are still finding difficult to explain. With all the events that unfolded in the MI camp in the lead-up to the season, this makes them the team to watch out for this season.
Hardik’s leadership was the talk within the GT camp for the two years that he led the franchise. Coming back to Mumbai however, he will be leading his Indian teammates and it will be interesting to see how he manages to bring everyone on the same page.
Heading into the auction, Mumbai released 11 players including the Jofra Archer for whom they paid big money in IPL 2022. Despite him being injured the management persisted with him the next season after which they finally released him.

As always Mumbai’s batting looked better than their bowling attack heading into the auction. With Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Tilav Varma, and Tim David their top order looked sorted. With Hardik coming in, it looks even more sorted now.
The seam bowling looked weak with only Jasprit Bumrah being the big pacer and Mumbai needed a backup for him preferably an Indian pacer. The release of Jhye Richardson, and Jofra Archer also meant that they needed a backup overseas pacer with just three overseas slots remaining.
