Chennai Super Kings won their first home encounter in nearly four years against Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk on Monday, but their pacers seemed out of sorts. Their four quick bowlers gave up 142 runs out of the 205 runs scored by the Lucknow franchise. These runs contained 13 wides and three no-balls.

Deepak Chahar, the captain of CSK’s pace attack, had a difficult day, giving out 55 runs in his four overs with no success. Deepak was out of action for about eight months last year owing to a stress fracture and a grade 3 rupture in his quad. CSK had bought him for ’14 crore in 2022, but injuries drove him out.

Deepak Chahar, the Indian fast bowler, has had a difficult year. He suffered a back ailment in February 2022, causing him to miss the previous year’s IPL. Afterwards, he hoped to make the T20 World Cup team, but he suffered another injury that forced him to withdraw from the tournament.

He attempted to return for the Bangladesh trip in December, but he sustained a quad grade 3 injury and was unable to play in the white-ball leg of the home season. Chahar’s injury problems have been frustrating, as he had been playing well before his injuries. Despite this, he stays committed to training hard to restore his fitness and hopes to return stronger when possibilities present themselves.

“I take it as a challenge and I also practice a lot”- Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar has been there himself when Dhoni forced the former to bowl in the final overs, which was outside of his comfort zone, in the absence of Dwayne Bravo in 2019. Chahar has been mostly utilized in the powerplay for years, regardless of the club on which he plays, where his capacity to swing the ball both ways makes him lethal.

He was unable to bowl as fully as he typically does including swing in Ahmedabad and Chennai due to the flat playing surfaces. He claims that he is looking forward to the challenge of bowling at death with two additional fielders without Bravo.

“I’ve done well for CSK whenever I’ve bowled in the 18th, 19th, and 20th over. Before this, my economy was under 8 when I bowled at death. In powerplay, your bowl with a new ball and have only 2 fielders outside whereas, in the slog overs, you bowl with an old ball and have five fielders outside,” Deepak Chahar said.

“I take it as a challenge and I also practice a lot. Earlier I didn’t bowl much because we had more options to bowl at the death. Since I’ve many variations — yorker, knuckleball, slow bouncer, leg-cutter, wide-yorker, off-cutter — you decide according to the batter and the pitch and execute accordingly,” Deepak Chahar asserted.

“Mentally it’s very tough. I had two major injuries which are critical for a fast bowler. Other pacers are also struggling with a stress fracture in the back. It takes a long time to recover from. When you start playing it takes time to get back to your best so it takes time mentally and physically, and I’m getting there slowly,” Deepak Chahar concluded.
