The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer Mitchell Starc was absolutely pumped up after rattling the stumps of Gerald Coetzee and guiding his team to a stunning victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 51st match of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) on Friday, May 3, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The Knight Riders have always struggled to win against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League and at the Wankhede Stadium they had an unbelievably poor record as heading into the match they had registered just one win over the 5-time champions at the venue in IPL history, which came back in 2012.

However, Kolkata Knight Riders didn't let the ghosts of the past performances haunt them as they did a decent job while batting first and then they were fantastic with the ball in the second innings. Venkatesh Iyer, who won the Player of the Match award, played a brilliant knock of 70 runs to power his team to a total of 169.

Defending the target, Mitchell Starc picked up 4 wickets while Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell bagged two wickets each to bowl out MI for 145 and registered a 24-run win. With the win, KKR ended their losing streak at Wankhede and this was their first victory at the venue in 12 long years.

The two-time champions sealed the victory on the 5th ball of the 19th over when Mitchell Starc bowled a trademark yorker to flatten the stumps of Gerald Coetzee for 8. Starc couldn't hide his emotions after bundling out MI and he erupted with an aggressive celebration. The KKR dugout also looked delighted while Gautam Gambhir and Abhishek Nayar looked absolutely thrilled and shared a lovely hug after the win.

Speaking after the match, the mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who played a key role in the win, said that they were confident of defending the total despite the dew around. He said:

"Extremely good feeling for we have never won in Wankhede in 12 years and it's a great feeling to win here. We were still confident, it was a matter of one wicket. 170 was below-par and there was dew in the 2nd innings, but we controlled our emotions and stuck to our plans. [on if it spun in the 2nd innings] Not much in the 2nd innings as there was dew."

Varun Chakravarthy revealed that they planned extensively for the match against MI and it worked out well for them. He also lauded Sunil Narine and added that he feels lucky to be bowling along with the West Indies great. He said:

"We planned extensively for this match and it worked out. They did tell me that the ball is stopping but as I got to bowl, it was not stopping and it was going on well. Sunny is a legend, he has been bowling the same way from I don't know when. Glad to be bowling alongside him."

Varun Chakravarthy signed off by labeling the win over MI as special. He elaborated:

"This is a very special win for we were down and out in the first innings, the way Pandey and Venkatesh pulled off the game from their shoulders was great. It is sort of a comeback from the Punjab game when we conceded so many runs, so we said Let's do it."
