Andre Russell, on Friday (May 3), failed to score big against Mumbai Indians as he was run out cheaply at the Wankhede Stadium.

The Kolkata Knight Riders allrounder had the perfect platform to provide the finishing touch to the innings. He walked out to bat in the 17th over after Manish Pandey's dismissal. KKR were on 140 for 6 at that stage. With more than three overs remaining, KKR would have hoped that Russell would take them to a 180-plus total.

Andre Russell started his innings on a perfect note as well by hitting the first ball he faced for a six. However, he had to return to the dressing room in the 17th over itself after being run out on the final ball of the over bowled by Hardik Pandya.

The Mumbai Indians skipper bowled one outside the leg stump and Venkatesh Iyer went for a reverse sweep. The left-handed batsman managed to hit the ball towards the short third-man fielder. It was Andre Russell's call and the West Indies star decided for a quick single.

Iyer also took a few steps forward while watching the ball. The KKR batter, however, had no intention of taking the run. By the time, Russell realised it, it was too late for him. The veteran allrounder turned back to try and get back inside the crease safely but Pandya did well to collect the poor throw from the fielder and dislodged the bails in a flash.

Talking about the game, KKR finished their innings on 169. Asked to bat first, KKR were reeling at 57 for 5 at one stage before Iyer's 70-run knock helped them post a challenging total.

Speaking at the end of the KKR innings, veteran spinner Piyush Chawla revealed the reason behind the visitors' struggle with the bat early in the innings. The leg-spinner said that the batters found it tough to time the ball because the 'wicket was a bit stopping'.

"The wicket was a bit stopping at the start, it’s a fresh wicket so it was a bit sticky, but no matter how it plays you have to bowl well. The way we bowled today it was really great to see. Well, at the end of the day, it totally depends on what the team requires, that time Hardik came and bowled a really good over. It looks like there is a bit of dew out there and it will play a little better," said Chawla.
