Former cricketer Deep Dasgupta feels that Rohit Sharma will be eager to perform in upcoming matches despite the Mumbai Indians (MI) being virtually out of the IPL 2024 season. Deep Dasgupta stated that the pride of the team motivates players like Rohit Sharma to deliver their best on the field.
Rohit Sharma was removed from the captaincy before the start of the 2024 Indian Premier League. Hardik Pandya replaced him as captain of the five-time IPL champion. However, the Mumbai-based team struggled in the ongoing tournament, having secured just three wins out of 11 matches.
The Hardik Pandya-led team is currently at the bottom of the table with six points and a net run rate (NRR) of -0.356. If they win all three remaining matches, Mumbai will finish with 12 points. They are mathematically still in the playoff race, but they can't reach the next stage.
You Want To Do Your Best - Deep Dasgupta
Deep Dasgupta highlighted the importance of playing for team pride as a professional cricketer in every match. The former cricketer stated that players have the motivation to give the best performance whenever stepping onto the field.
"You are playing for the pride of the team, you are playing as a professional cricketer and you are playing for your pride as well. You don't want to play a game and not want to perform. Everytime you cross the line, you want to do your best," Dasgupta told Star Sports.
This Is The Last Few Opportunities - Deep Dasgupta
Deep Dasgupta stated that Rohit Sharma needs to maintain his batting performance, considering the upcoming mega auction. Dasgupta stated that this is one of the last few opportunities to showcase his abilities.
"Let's not forget that next year is the big auction. This is the last few opportunities that all the professional cricketers have. Even if the team is not going to qualify, at least to put up a good show and tell everyone, 'You know what, I am there'," Dasgupta said.
Rohit Sharma Is Such An Integral Part Of The Team - Deep Dasgupta
The former wicketkeeper mentioned that Rohit Sharma's form is crucial for the Indian team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the USA. Dasgupta stated that Rohit plays a pivotal role in setting the tone for the team, which he has consistently done over the last year and a half.
"He is such an integral part of the team since he is the captain, but he sets the tone as well at the top of the order. That's what he has been doing for the last year and a half," he added.
Rohit Sharma has scored 326 runs in 11 matches at an average of 32.60 and a strike rate of 154.50, including a century against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The 37-year-old will be next seen in action when the Mumbai Indians take on SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday, May 6.
