Michael Vaughan calls James Anderson 'not the greatest of all time' ahead of pacer's farewell Test

Former player Michael Vaughan feels that James Anderson is among the top 10 cricketers of all time in international cricket. Michael Vaughan also feels Stuart Broad is close to him by a small margin but James Anderson wins the list.

Notably, James Anderson is set to retire from Tests after the forthcoming West Indies vs England 1st Test. England is set to clash with West Indies in a three-match T20I series starting July 10. Both sides will engage in three exciting games during the series and it is also part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2023-25.

The England vs West Indies 1st Test will be played at Lord's in London. James Anderson will retire from the Tests after the series. Notably, the right-arm pacer has already retired from ODIs and T20Is long back and only represented the England team in the longest format.

Anderson and Broad were the two pillars of England in Test cricket. Both the pacers helped England to set up a dominating pace attack in the longest format. Borad retired from Tests during The Ashes 2023 last year. Now, his friend Anderson will also bid goodbye to the longest format soon.

During a chat show Club Prairie Fire, Michael Vaughan expressed his views on the historic event when James Anderson bid goodbye to the longest format. During the show, the hosts asked him about his reaction to the same.

“Jimmy Anderson is set to play his last ever Test match for England. 󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧Tomorrow so everyone is debating where he ranks in the list of all-time great cricketers. What an unbelievable career. So where is he the number one ever test seam bowler? the hosts asked.

"Sorry, in England? He's got the most wickets. I mean, he's got in international cricket. I think he's got 987 poles. He's got 987 wickets in international cricket”, Vaughan replied.

Vaughan, a former England skipper, also feels that Stuart Broad was close to him but Anderson is the best seamer in international cricket for England and overall he is among the top 10 cricketers of all time.

“See, the professor there is now starting to realize when we start talking about the greatest, he could quite easily be up there. He certainly is England's greatest by a good mile or two because Stuart Broad is close in the likes of Freddie Truman back in the day were outstanding players, much like cricket”, Vaughan further said.

“So obviously they don't get as many wickets, but, you know, you've got to say he's right up there with the best. I mean, I think if you said that, if you mentioned, I think he's in the top 10 cricketers of all time”, he concluded. Have a look at the video below.

James Anderson 13 wickets away from 1K mark

James Anderson has played 187 Tests for England since his debut in 2003. He has been around for more than 20 years and accounts for 700 Test wickets and a total of 987 wickets in international cricket. Notably, he is the pacer with the most wickets in international cricket.

Notably, Anderson can also touch the mark of 1000 Test wickets during the match, however, he needs 13 wickets for the same. Although it is a challenging task, there is a possibility since the opposition is West Indies and England play on their home soil.
