Shreyas Iyer's first outing as India's full-time T20I captain ended in disappointment as Ireland stunned the world champions by 34 runs in the opening T20I in Belfast on Friday.

The defeat not only handed Ireland their first-ever international win over India but also saw Shreyas Iyer enter an unwanted list featuring some of Indian cricket's biggest names. The right-handed batter became only the fourth Indian captain to lose his first T20I as skipper, joining Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill.

The result has also reignited the debate surrounding India's decision to move on from Suryakumar Yadav despite the Mumbai batter leading the side to unprecedented success in the shortest format.

Ireland spoil Shreyas Iyer's captaincy debut

It was a historic evening for Ireland and a forgettable one for India. After being invited to bat first, Ireland recovered from a shaky start to post 182/9 in their 20 overs. Captain Lorcan Tucker led the fightback with a well-made half-century, while Gareth Delany narrowly missed out on a fifty with a crucial 49-run knock.

India had opportunities to restrict the hosts to a lower total but failed to capitalize during the middle overs. Harshit Rana was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/24, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel chipped in with two wickets each.

In reply, India got off to a flying start through Abhishek Sharma, who hammered 49 runs off just 20 deliveries. However, once the opener departed, Ireland seized complete control of the contest.

The Indian middle order struggled against disciplined bowling from the hosts. Debutants Matt Hollard and Jai Moondra played key roles as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals.

From 80/3, India slipped badly and eventually folded for 148 in 18.5 overs, falling 34 runs short of the target. The defeat ensured that Shreyas Iyer's captaincy journey began on the wrong note despite arriving as one of India's most experienced T20 batters.

Shreyas Iyer enters the unwanted India captaincy list

The loss in Belfast created an unwanted record for the newly-appointed skipper. Shreyas Iyer became only the fourth Indian captain to lose his first T20I in charge. Before him, only Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill had suffered defeats in their captaincy debuts in the format.

Most Indian captains have enjoyed winning starts. Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Suryakumar Yadav all won their first T20I as captain.

At 31 years and 202 days, Shreyas Iyer became the third-oldest Indian captain at the time of his T20I captaincy debut, behind only Shikhar Dhawan and Suryakumar Yadav. He also entered the role with more T20I experience than any Indian captain before him.

He had already played 114 T20Is before captaining India, surpassing Rohit Sharma's previous record of 80 appearances before his first match as skipper. Virat Kohli (72), KL Rahul (42), Rishabh Pant (30) and Dhawan (21) are all behind him on that list.

Those numbers highlighted the faith selectors had in Iyer's experience, making the defeat even more disappointing from India's perspective.

Did India move on from Suryakumar Yadav too quickly?

The result has inevitably sparked fresh discussions over India's captaincy change. Suryakumar Yadav's record as T20I captain remains one of the best India have ever had. Under his leadership, India won 42 of their 52 matches and never lost a T20I series or tournament.

More importantly, India lifted the 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup during his tenure, establishing themselves as the dominant force in world cricket.

Despite those achievements, the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir opted for a fresh direction following the World Cup triumph, handing the leadership responsibilities to Iyer.

One defeat should not define a captain, especially in his very first game. However, the timing of the loss has naturally intensified scrutiny over the decision.

Iyer remains one of India's most accomplished white-ball batters and will have an immediate opportunity to respond in the second T20I against Ireland. For now, though, his first day as India's full-time T20I captain has resulted in a place on an unwanted list alongside Kohli, Pant and Gill.
