The County Championship Division Two is nearing its end, and Durham have already qualified for Division One for the forthcoming season. Now, after securing their win over Gloucestershire, they have acquired the services of the India National Cricket Team batter Mayank Agarwal. He is set to join the side for the rest of the matches.
Durham were recently involved in a funny moment as they were denied victory on Day 3 of their last match due to bad light, with just four runs needed to win the game. On the following day, they took just one over to finish the match and kept their top position intact. They will look to win their remaining matches as well.
Mayank Agarwal joins Durham
Mayank Agarwal joins as the replacement for the South Africa National Cricket Team batter David Bedingham. The Proteas batter returns to his homeland to prepare for the upcoming series against Australia. He played a knock of 122 runs in the first innings in the last match and helped his side to win the game by 10 wickets at Chester-le-Street.
Mayank has experience of playing in the County last season, having played the last three matches of the 2025 season for Yorkshire. In five innings, Agarwal scored 201 runs for Yorkshire. He scored a match-winning 175 against Durham in his last innings, which helped Yorkshire secure their place in Division One, and now he has joined the side against whom his highest score came.
Mayank Agarwal career and Ranji Trophy
Agarwal made his international debut against Australia on December 26, 2018, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and since then has scored 1,488 runs at 41.33 in 21 Tests for India between 2018 and 2021, including four hundreds and a best of 243 against Bangladesh at Indore in 2019.
He has been in good form in the domestic format for Karnataka. In the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season, he made 678 runs at 42.37, including a best of 160 in the final against Jammu and Kashmir, but could not help his side win the silverware as he finished as the third- highest run scorer for the side.

After Mayank Agarwal joined Durham, head coach Ryan Campbell is happy to welcome him, and the management is delighted to have him in the side. The management acted very fast to bring in someone experienced like the veteran India batter into the side, with Bedingham returning to South Africa.
"We are delighted to have Mayank joining us for our County Championship run-in," Ryan Campbell, Durham's head coach, said.
"With David Bedingham returning to South Africa ahead of their international red-ball summer, it was important we acted by recruiting a high-class international cricketer for the remainder of the season.
Campbell further added, "Mayank is a hugely talented batter who has a superb first-class record, we look forward to him contributing to Durham as we look to secure our return to Division One of the County Championship."
