However, after Durham were denied the win on day 3, their head coach Ryan Campbell took to social media to express his frustrations. The on-field umpires, James Tredwell and Steve O’Shaughnessy, called off the day due to bad light at local time 6.20 pm, as they declared that it was too cloudy and dark to play the rest of the game, with just four runs required. After the bizarre decision of the umpires, the former Australia cricketer Ryan Campbell was furious.
Campbell did not hold back as he blamed the umpires for the poor decision-making. Campbell wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Cricket sometimes doesn’t help itself. Before everyone loads up on the poor old umpires, it’s not their fault.” The team was tense as they faced a poor weather forecast on the final day.
Durham qualifies for Division 1 of County Championship
Ben Stokes’ Durham sealed the victory on the fourth day with just 6 balls played; this comes as a funny and rare moment in cricket. But the umpires had to follow the rules; if they had continued, it would have been a question of the officials if anything worse had happened.
Durham won the County game by 10 wickets at Chester-le-Street, as they were chasing a target of just four runs. The win helped them take another big step towards promotion back to the top flight and the Division Two title in the County Championship. After the win, they got 22 points in the County table and ranked at the top with 7 wins this season.
Kasey Aldridge shines for Durham
Coming to the match, Durham won the toss and decided to field. After being asked to bat first, Gloucestershire kept on losing wickets at regular intervals; Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts picked two wickets each, and Ben Stokes picked one wicket, as the star with the ball was Kasey Aldridge, who picked a fifer was bowled out for 167.
Durham came to bat in their first innings; South Africa batter David Bedingham scored a hundred as the Proteas batter played a knock of 122 runs. Ben Stokes scored 45 runs before being bowled by R Sai Kishore. Ollie Robinson, who is currently playing the 2nd Test, scored an impressive 44 runs in the County game.
After Durham had taken a 247-run lead in the first innings, Aldridge struck again with 4-47 to conclude with match figures of 9-63. Gloucestershire was bowled out for 250 runs in the second innings, needing four runs to win for the table toppers.
