Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has surprisingly come up with a name, who could lead the nation in the 50-over World Cup in 2023 instead of Eoin Morgan. Eoin Morgan, who ushered England to World Cup glory last year, remains a doubtful fixture two years later as he would be 36 then. Michael Vaughan reckons that keeper-batsman Jos Buttler may captain the defending champions in 2023.

Jos Buttler already serves as the white-ball team’s vice-captain and is leading England in the ongoing ODI against India. The right-handed batsman’s captaincy record looks promising so far, leading England to four victories in six ODIs. While Eoin Morgan might have taken the national team to unprecedented heights, his age and current form remain a significant concern.

Michael Vaughan pointed out that Eoin Morgan talked about focussing on the T20 World Cup for now and then shifting to the longer format, concentrating on tiny segments first. The 46-year old doubts whether the Irishman might be around by the 2023 World Cup and may have moved on. Nevertheless, Vaughan believes that the selectors will not axe him and that Morgan will decide himself.

“I heard him the other day and he was just so focused on talking about the T20 World Cups. I just get a sense that he wants to get to this [T20] World Cup first and get to the next one. He just wants to take small segments of his career and he’s not looking too far ahead. By the time the next [50-over] World Cup in India, 2023, I have to be honest, he might not be in the team by then. He may have moved on. He will certainly not get pushed out, he’ll decide upon himself when he wants to move on,” Vaughan told Cricbuzz.

The former England captain remembered hearing whispers about Eoin Morgan stepping away from ODIs after lifting the World Cup in 2019. With the southpaw’s batting form declining, Vaughan believes Jos Buttler might succeed him as skipper in the 2023 World Cup.

“There were whispers in 2019, when he lifted the trophy that he was going to step aside from the 50-over game. I still think that’s possible that by the time we get to the 2023 World Cup, Jos Buttler may be leading the side. He’s a fine fine player Eoin Morgan but as his numbers suggest, he’s not been in great nick of late,” he added.
