Islamabad United head coach Mike Hesson has shared a detailed analysis of the challenges Gary Kirsten will be facing as the head coach of the Pakistan cricket team. Hesson said that Kirsten is a meticulous researcher, and he was not surprised by the current situation of Pakistan cricket.

The former New Zealand head coach said that Pakistan has developed a selfish model because of the chopping and changing at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the leadership of the national team, leading to their downfall.

He further mentioned that the frequent changes in Pakistan’s leadership and administration have developed a culture where players prefer to prioritize their individual performances over team goals due to the uncertainty they face regarding their positions, knowing that a new administration could easily replace them if they don't perform exceptionally well.

Hesson emphasized that constant turmoil makes it difficult for players to fully commit to the team plan or ethos, as they are aware that their tenure and that of the coaching staff could be abruptly cut short after one or two poor assignments.

Mike Hesson said in a video posted by Pakistan journalist Sad Sadiq: “Firstly, I don't think Gary would be surprised. I mean, if Gary did his research, and I know he's a well-researched man, he would work out that players, because of the chopping and changing of the chair and the leadership of the team, have to look after themselves.

And that's the model that Pakistan cricket has developed. They've developed a selfish model because players can't turn up and say, Hey, we're going to buy into this team plan, this team ethos, because I could be gone tomorrow.”

Given that Islamabad United's coach said that this situation poses a significant challenge for Gary Kirsten, fostering trust and commitment within the Pakistan cricket team will be incredibly tough for him under such uncertain conditions, and his job is also not safe.

Hesson added, “You know, if someone new comes in, they'll have a different idea. Unless I score 100 today or look after myself, I could easily get sidetracked. So that just doesn't instill any form of team mentality. So, you know, I don't think Gary will be surprised.

How he makes that change will be interesting, because, you know, once again, it's really hard for a player to go. Yes, Gary, we trust you, we believe you, and we'll back you if they don't know if Gary's going to be there in six months' time, eight months' time, or whatever. And based on history, that's a real threat.”

Hesson, who worked with Kirsten together for RCB in the IPL, suggested the Pakistan coach identify and nurture players who are genuinely enthusiastic about playing for Pakistan and are willing to buy into the team’s vision, and then start to weed out those who potentially aren't looking to play for the team.

However, Hesson admitted that it will be really tough, and noted that Kirsten will need massive support from the PCB and administration to make these changes effectively.
