Mitchell Santner issues Pat Cummins-like 'breaking billion hearts' warning ahead of T20 WC 2026 final

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner issued a warning to Suryakumar Yadav's side just ahead of the highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2026 final. The left-arm spinner stated that he wouldn’t mind breaking a billion hearts and winning the trophy at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8.
Indian cricket fans remember the famous press conference by Australian captain Pat Cummins before the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad. Cummins stated that he wanted to silence the massive one-sidead crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium, and his team eventually did exactly that to win the trophy.
Wouldn't Mind Breaking a Few Hearts to Lift the Trophy - Mitchell Santner
During the press conference, Mitchell Santner stated that his side would not shy away from being the "bad guys" to silence the home crowd. The captain said that they can definitely upset the big team and lift their first T20 World Cup title.
“I wouldn't mind winning a trophy. You look at this group and the groups that have been in the past, we are pretty consistent on these because we try not to get overawed by the situation or opponents. We go out there and do our thing. And as a unit, it's been no different this time. And again, it's going to be obviously a challenge where everyone knows we're probably not the favourites. But we don't mind,” Santner told reporters on Saturday.
“We know we can, if we do our little things well and put in a strong team performance, put us in a pretty good position to hopefully lift the trophy. I wouldn't mind breaking a few hearts to lift the trophy for once,” he added.
A Lot of Pressure on India to Win This World Cup at Home - Mitchell Santner
Mitchell Santner also pointed out that playing at home brings a lot of baggage for the Men in Blue. He added that his team will try to put even more pressure on the Indian players.
“If we go about our business the same way, we can upset another big team. And I think there is obviously a lot of pressure on India to win this World Cup at home," Santner stated.
"I guess if we don't win, it'd be pretty cool to win a home at the World Cup. So I think that comes with a lot of added pressure as well. So if we can go out there and try and put, I guess, the added pressure on them and see what happens,” he added.
The Guys Are Excited and Ready to Go - Mitchell Santner
Mitchell Santner expressed his excitement about the final. Santner believes there are absolutely no secrets about what to expect on the field tomorrow, adding that the boys are buzzing and ready to go for the title clash.
"I'm pretty excited. I mean, we obviously played India a little bit before this tournament started, and it was a good series for us, building up for the World Cup. So yeah, I guess there are no secrets about what is going to be out there tomorrow. The first thing is that the boys are buzzing. Obviously, it's a World Cup final, and the guys are excited and ready to go."
The veteran spinner noted that every team's main goal is to take one game at a time, from the group stage to the Super Eights and the semifinals. He added that both teams have taken different roads to reach the final, but it is a one-off shootout.
"I think everyone's goal is to get through each stage, whether it's the group stage, the Super Eight, or into the semifinal. So yeah, we've had different roads to get to where we are today, but at the end of the day, it's a one-off game shootout against a very good team. I think momentum is obviously a massive part. We've taken a lot of confidence from our last game, and I think India will do the same."
