Mitchell Santner cleared for Super 8s vs Pakistan; uncertainty looms over New Zealand pacer: The 2026 T20 World Cup group stages have come to an end, with Australia beating Oman in a dead rubber game. The next round, the Super 8s, will begin on Saturday, 21st February, with New Zealand taking on Pakistan in the very first fixture of the second round of the competition. Both teams have been seeded in Group 2 alongside England and Sri Lanka.
Ahead of the important clash, Mitchell Santner, the regular captain of the New Zealand team, will be back in the side after he missed out on the final group stage game against Canada on February 17 due to illness. In his absence, Daryl Mitchell led the side, with the Kiwis chasing off a target of 175 in just 15 overs.
Mitchell Santner returns to the side
Mitchell Santner's return will be a big boost for the Black Caps, given the conditions in Sri Lanka, especially at the R Premedasa Stadium, Colombo. The pitch suits the spinners, and Mitchell Santner has been one of the most clever bowlers and might blow slow and ask the batters to take him down with bigger boundaries. His leadership will also be a key in the important clash.
Another New Zealand cricketer missed out on the final group game, the team’s pacer Lockie Ferguson, who went back to New Zealand due to the birth of his first child, and has joined the squad in Colombo on Friday night. His participation on the weekend is doubtful, as he just travelled a day before the game.
Mark Chapman shares team updates ahead of Pakistan clash
Batter Mark Chapman, who arrived at the press conference ahead of the game, gave updates about the participation of both cricketers. "Mitchell Santner looks pretty sprightly, so I think he’s pretty excited to get back on the park. “Barring any last-minute sickness, I think he’ll be there," Chapman said when asked about team news.
"Obviously, Lockie has left us. I think he’s currently on the way back. I think he’s landing potentially tonight (Friday). So we’ll just see how he pulls up from the flight. I can’t confirm or say whether he’ll be in the 11 or not. I’m not too sure, to be honest."
The bowling department of New Zealand has been a headache for the management; they have leaked runs in the group stages against the associate nations. This will be the first match for the Kiwis in Sri Lanka. They would want to have some assistance from the pitch and assess the conditions against a side that has been there in the Island nation for more than three weeks.
New Zealand batters to continue with red-hot form
The batters have been in sensational form for the Black Caps, especially the top order of Tim Seifert and Finn Allen, who have been in blistering form, and Rachin Ravindra has also showcased his prowess with the bat. However, in Sri Lanka, it will be a difficult challenge with the ball gripping and the pitch being on the slower side.
Chapman concluded saying, "I wouldn’t necessarily say leaking runs, but I think in India we’ve seen that the pitches — particularly on red soil — have been favourable for batting. So it’s been pretty tough for the bowlers. The margins have been pretty small. You’ve seen a lot of games nearing that 200 score regularly. So I think the bowlers have certainly had a little bit of a challenge."
