Delhi Capitals probably have the most balanced side in the upcoming season of the IPL. Mitchell Starc forms the core of the bowling deck, and now the uncertainty around his availability has further heightened.

The Delhi Capitals finished last season in 5th place in the IPL 2025. Despite a stunning start to the season, they did not make it to the competition's playoffs, as the Gujarat Titans and the Mumbai Indians advanced to the top four.

Axar Patel would once again be leading the Capitals in the IPL. The Indian T20I vice-captain led the IPL franchise in the last season. However, several experts claimed that the Delhi Capitals' progress this season would largely depend on their probable XI.

Mitchell Starc to miss majority of IPL 2026 season

Ahead of the start of the season, the Delhi Capitals have had immense doubt over the availability of their star pacer, Mitchell Starc. The Australian speedster last featured in the Big Bash League final for the Sydney Sixers. Internationally, his last appearance was back in January 2026 in the final Ashes Test between England and Australia.

The Capitals had expected that he would be available throughout the season this time. In the last season as well, Mitchell Starc missed the latter half of the season after he flew back following the war-like situation between India and Pakistan in the middle of IPL 2025.

However, Alyssa Healy, the Australian speedster's wife, clarified through an X comment that Starc is injured to some extent and that has led to his unavailability in the first half of the tournament.

KL Rahul would open for the Capitals; Who will be his opening partner?

Delhi Capitals has agreed to open the innings with KL Rahul, the veteran batter. KL Rahul failed to get a fixed position in the Capitals' batting order throughout 2025; however, despite being slotted in the middle order, Rahul amassed over 500 runs and averaged nearly 54.

KL Rahul played some spectacular innings and helped Capitals to a promising chase. He also scored his maiden hundred for them last season. He has been slotted in as the opener in the side.

However, the question remains who would open alongside Rahul for the Capitals. They will have Pathum Nissanka, Ben Duckett, Prithvi Shaw, and Abishek Porel to pick from. The team that struggled at the top is likely to dominate the power play this season.

Who are probable overseas picks for Delhi Capitals playing XI in 2026?

The Capitals will have a huge variety of overseas cricketers. Ben Duckett and Pathum Nissanka were both picked to strengthen their top-order batting depth. They will also have two middle-order experts in Proteas stars, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs.

Miller is far more experienced in the field, while Stubbs has been in promising form with the bat. He also led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to their third title in SA20. In Mitchell Starc's unavailability, Lungi Ngidi is most likely to be slotted in as the replacement pacer.
