Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow to be dropped from England's white-ball squads vs Australia
Senior players Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow are set to be dropped from England's squads for the upcoming T20I and ODI series against Australia. It is believed that the selectors and the team management are looking at young options who can serve the team in the future.
England will host a three-match T20I series and a five-match ODI series against Australia. The three T20Is will be played on September, 11, 13, and 15 respectively while the ODIs will be played between September 19 and 29.
Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow set to be dropped from England's white-ball squads
In the Vitality Blast T20, Moeen Ali scored a brilliant hundred before going into The Hundred 2024 where he led the team Birmingham Phoenix.
Moeen Ali had a disappointing season with the bat as Moeen Ali scored 150 runs in nine matches at an average of 21.42 and a strike rate of 117.18.
Jonny Bairstow too, had a poor tournament while playing for Welsh Fire. He scored 123 runs in seven matches at an average of 20.50 and a strike rate of 120.58.
Both Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow have been struggling for runs for quite a while now. Even during England's campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024, Ali and Bairstow underperformed and their team suffered.
Liam Livingstone can be dropped too
Apart from Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone is also under serious doubt for the ODI leg of the Australia series.
Livingstone has been a force in T20Is and has played influential cameos down the order. His ability to score quick runs has often changed the game in England's favor in the shortest format.
However, Livingstone, record in ODIs hasn't been great. The 31-year-old allrounder averages just 29.36 after 25 ODIs, which does not justify his position in the team.
He too had a disappointing Hundred 2024 season with just 134 runs at an average of 22.33 and a strike rate of 128.84.
According to The Telegraph, England are set to unleash a new batting talent in the form of Jacob Bethell in the upcoming Australia series.
The youngster has a brilliant record in T20s having scored 731 runs at a strike rate of 138.18 in 44 matches.
The left-hander also had an impressive outing in The Hundred 2024 where he scored 166 runs in nine matches at an average of 33.20 and a strike rate of 132.80.
The England team management are also thinking of bringing back Joe Root in England's limited overs set-up.
Root last played an ODI in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Since then, the Three Lions have played just three ODIs so far.
However, Joe Root's role is going to be crucial in the Champions Trophy 2025, which will be held next year in February-March. Root is the glue of England's batting line-up and can play the role of an anchor.
In 171 ODIs, Root has scored 6522 runs at an average of 47.60 and a strike rate of 86.77.
