The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly set to sack Mohammad Rizwan as the T20I captain following the team’s disappointing performance in the ICC Champions Trophy. According to Samaa.tv, Salman Ali Agha or Mohammad Haris is in consideration for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.
Pakistan had a golden opportunity to excel on home soil in the Champions Trophy. However, they were eliminated from the group stage under Mohammad Rizwan's leadership. The cricket board has decided to make significant changes, with Rizwan’s removal as T20I captain being one of the key decisions.
PCB to Pick Between Salman Agha and Mohammad Haris for T20I Captaincy
According to Samaa.tv, the Pakistan Cricket Board will fire Mohammad Rizwan as T20I captain ahead of the team's tour of New Zealand. The board is considering Salman Ali Agha or Mohammad Haris as potential replacements to lead the team.
"Pakistan's T20 captain Muhammad Rizwan is probably going to be fired. Salman Ali Agha and Muhammad Haris are reportedly being considered by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as possible successors to the T20 captaincy," the Saama.TV report read.
Mohammad Haris made his international debut in 2022 and has represented Pakistan in six ODIs and nine T20Is. However, he has delivered underwhelming performances, scoring 30 runs in ODIs and 126 runs in T20Is. He last played for Pakistan in 2023 against Sri Lanka, where he managed only three runs.
On the other hand, Salman Ali Agha is the vice-captain in white-ball formats. The right-handed batter has scored 976 runs in 35 ODIs at an average of 44.36, including one century and five fifties. However, he has failed to deliver in the shorter format, scoring 50 runs in 6 T20Is at a strike rate of 79.37.
Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan Set to Be Dropped from T20I Squad
The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to drop senior players like Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam from the T20I squad for the New Zealand series. Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf will also not be part of the ODI squad. Young fast bowlers Akif Javed and Mohammad Wasim Jr could be included.
"Babar and Mohammad Rizwan out from T20 series. Haris, Shaheen, and most probably Naseem out from the ODI squad. Fakhta told me that Akif Javed, Shadab Khan, Wasim Jr., and Mohammad Haris will be IN the T20 Squad. Young players ko Moka milnay laga hai," Qadir Khawaja wrote.
