Mohammed Shami Domestic Cricket Career:

October 2010 marked the beginning of Mohammed Shami’s career in domestic cricket. While playing for Bengal in the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy, Shami took 3 wickets against Assam. After this, on 10 February 2011, Shami made his List-A cricket debut against Odisha in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Where he took 3 wickets for 39 runs in 10 overs. Mohammed Shami made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2013. Then he was contracted by Kolkata Knight Riders. However, Shami could not do anything special that season and was seen sitting on the bench in most of the matches. After this, in the 2014 IPL season, Delhi Capitals bought Mohammed Shami for Rs 4.25 crore. That season Shami played 12 matches and took 7 wickets. Delhi Capitals retained him for the 2015 season as well. He was again bought by them in the 2018 IPL auction. The following season, he was bought by Punjab Kings for Rs 4.8 crore and was the team’s leading wicket-taker in 2019. Due to his excellent performance in domestic cricket, Mohammed Shami made a place in the Indian team in 2013. Shami made his ODI debut against Pakistan on 6 January 2013 in Delhi. He performed brilliantly in his first match and also took one wicket for 23 runs in 9 overs. In which he bowled four maiden overs. In 2014, Shami took 11 wickets at an average of 28.72 in a series against New Zealand. Shami became the second Indian bowler to take the fastest 50 ODI wickets in the 2014 Asia Cup. Mohammed Shami made his Test debut on 6 November 2013 against West Indies in Kolkata. He took 9 wickets in his first Test match, which is the most by any Indian fast bowler on debut. Due to his excellent performance, he was included in the team for the series against South Africa. He played two test matches and took a total of 6 wickets. After this, Shami was selected in the Indian team for the 2014–15 Border Gavaskar Trophy, where he took 15 wickets in five innings.

  • Domestic violence and abuse allegations:

In March 2018, an FIR was lodged against Mohammed Shami and his family members by his wife Hasin Jahan under sections 498 A, 323, 307, 376, 506, 328, 34 of the Indian Penal Code, citing domestic violence and adultery. Shami’s elder brother was accused of rape. While Shami was accused of crimes related to domestic violence, attempt to murder, poisoning and criminal intimidation. Shami denied all the allegations and claimed that it was a conspiracy and was planted to distract him from cricket. Following these allegations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) removed Shami from its national contract list.

His wife also claimed that Shami was involved in match fixing. It was investigated by the BCCI-run anti-corruption unit and on March 22, the board cleared Shami of corruption charges and reinstated his national contract. On 2 September 2019, an Alipore court issued an arrest warrant against Shami on domestic violence charges, giving him 15 days to present himself after returning to India. The warrant was stayed by a district court on September 9 because the court which had issued the warrant failed to issue a summons to appear in the court after filing the charge sheet.
