India fast bowler Mohammed Shami is known for his lethal fast-bowling skills on the field. Shami can knock out any team in the world when he is on song. The greatest example was the ODI World Cup 2023, where Shami emerged as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament despite not being a part of the initial matches.

Recently, Shami was asked about his choice for the No. 1 bowler in India. But surprisingly, he did not mention the name of Jasprit Bumrah and instead chose himself as the country's No. 1 bowler.

Mohammed Shami does not consider Jasprit Bumrah as India's No. 1 bowler

During a podcast on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube channel, Shami was asked about the No. 1 bowler in India at the moment.

“Abhi? Main he manta hoon (Right now, I consider myself) (laughs)," Shami replied in a humorous manner.

Shami also praised India's fast bowling unit in the past few years. He believes that this fast bowling unit was the best thing for him as it consisted of world-class bowlers who supported each other.

“Humari jo unit rahi hai, mai, Jassi (Bumrah), Ishant bhi usme tha, Bhuvneshwar bhi usme tha, Umesh Yadav. Jo ye 5-6 the naa hum ek saath, mujhe lagta hai duniya ki kisi unit ne itna enjoy nahi kiya hoga jo is unit ne kiya hai. Main to maanta hoon.. main 1 or No. 2 pe believe nahi karta. As a person, as a sportsman, as a unit, jo meri life mei ye 5-6 logo ki unit bani thi na one of the best thi (Our bowling unit that consisted of Jasprit, Ishant, Bhuvneshwar, Umesh Yadav enjoyed a lot together. That's what I believe. I don't believe in No. 1 or No. 2. As a sportsman, this bowling unit was the best thing for me)," Shami added.

India's world-class fast-bowling

India's fast bowling has significantly improved over the past few years. In a country where fast bowling wasn't given much importance, it seems to be a huge achievement to produce quicks of this caliber.

India have been able to register historic overseas wins because of its superior fast bowling attack and have constantly troubled the opponents in their own backyard. The Men in Blue are no longer depended on the spinner to win them games.

With Bumrah, Shami, and Siraj as the potential top three quicks in the country right now, India have a world-class fast-bowling attack that is capable of winning games in any conditions of the world.

Mohammed Shami is currently out of the Indian team right now as he underwent an Achilles Tendon injury a few months ago. The 33-year-old quick has been out of the team since the ODI World Cup 2023 final, which was played in November.

Meanwhile, his bowling partner Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc recently in the T20 World Cup 2024. Bumrah picked up 15 wickets in the tournament in just 8 matches at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17.
