Despite his brilliant performance in the opening game, Mohammed Siraj was benched for the rest of the matches due to team combinations. Reflecting on his duties outside the boundary rope, he said that reserve players carry drinks and maintain a positive environment.
“Yes, we also have a very big role. Even when we are sitting outside, we help by carrying drinks to the field, and bowling in the nets. We try to keep a positive environment and pass that positivity to the players. As a player, it always feels good to contribute to the team in this way.”
We Had To Sit Out, We Accepted It - Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj said that missing out on the playing eleven in a World Cup can be frustrating for any top athlete. However, the star bowler stated that personal milestones do not matter, as the management's combination ultimately led to the trophy.
“But when the team decided on a certain combination and we had to sit out, we accepted it because the team is more important than any personal goal. Whatever the team thinks is best for the side, we support that. So it feels really good.”
New Zealand chose to bowl after winning the toss in the T20 World Cup final. The defending champions posted a massive 255/5 in their 20 overs. Sanju Samson scored 89 off 46 balls while Ishan Kishan (54 off 25) and Abhishek Sharma (52 off 21) chipped in with key runs.
New Zealand struggled during the chase and were dismissed for 159 in 19 overs. Tim Seifert scored 52 off 26 at the top, but the rest of the batting unit failed to build partnerships. India kept taking wickets at regular intervals, with Jasprit Bumrah claiming four and Axar Patel taking three.
