Mohammed Siraj has found himself in hot water after an emotionally charged moment during his 10th over on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide.

The drama unfolded at Adelaide Oval when the Indian pacer threw the ball in the direction of Marnus Labuschagne in frustration after the Australian batter pulled away from his stance following an unexpected disruption near the sight screen on Day 1 of the ongoing pink-ball Test match.

The incident unfolded in the 25th over of the Australian innings when a fan, carrying a towering beer snake, strolled across the sight screen. The movement distracted Marnus Labuschagne, who promptly backed out of his stance just as Mohammed Siraj was mid-stride in his delivery run-up.

Unaware of the cause of Labuschagne’s action, Siraj, who was already in the heat of battle, let his emotions get the better of him. An angry Indian pacer threw the ball toward the stumps, sharing an intense stare with the Australian batter, as the moment to delay in Adelaide.

Throwing the ball near the batter is a violation of ICC regulations and could result in serious implications for the fiery Indian pacer. Such actions breach the ICC’s strict guidelines regarding player conduct, which might lead to disciplinary action against Siraj once the Day-Night Test concludes.

Mohammed Siraj’s angry outburst in Adelaide Test could lead to ICC action

According to the ICC Code of Conduct, Mohammed Siraj's actions violated the rules. Under clause 2.9, the Indian pacer acted improperly by throwing a ball or any cricket equipment, such as a water bottle, toward or near another player, support staff, umpire, match referee, or any other person in a way deemed inappropriate or dangerous during an international match.

The ICC Code of Conduct’s Clause 2.9 states: “Throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment, such as a water bottle) at or near a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee, or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match.”

The clause also made it clear that it does not restrict a fielder or bowler from throwing the ball toward the stumps during a run-out attempt or returning it normally to the stumps or a teammate.

But addressing such incidents, the ICC officials will take several factors into account. The clause further states: “This offense will not prohibit a fielder or bowler from returning the ball to the stumps in the normal fashion or from throwing the ball at the stumps or to a teammate when attempting a run out.

(i) the context of the particular situation, including, without limitation, whether the action was deliberate, reckless, negligent, and/or avoidable; (ii) whether the ball/object struck the other person; (iii) the speed at which the ball/object was thrown; and (iv) the distance from which the ball/object was thrown.”
