Ex-PCB chief Najam Sethi makes huge comments on ICC and Jay Shah: India vs Pakistan, the 2026 T20 World Cup match will finally take place after weeks of drama and turmoil. The Pakistan government decided not to play against their arch-rivals in the major event showcasing solidarity with Bangladesh who were ousted by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

However, after some demands made by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) were met by the ICC, the federal government of Pakistan finally gave the green light for the participation. After the U-turn made by the PCB, former Pakistan chief Najam Sethi made his comments on the apex body. He believes that it is the ICC that had to bow down and not the PCB.

Najam Sethi makes surprising comments against the ICC

In an exclusive interview with India Today, consulting editor Rajdeep Sardesai, Sethi said, "In fact, it's the ICC that has taken a step back. I think the ICC has decided to back off a little bit, give Bangladesh some space."

"It was a very considered decision from Pakistan. They looked at all the angles. They knew that there could be no sanctions (for boycotting India match). They consulted the top lawyers at home and abroad."

PCB does not stand on ICC's revenue

Najam Sethi further added, "And there are precedents that made it clear to them that they were on a very strong wicket. And at best, they would lose a point, no more than that. And I think the ICC also realised that, which is why then the ICC got into motion and made overtures."

"That's how Imran Khawaja, the deputy chief, got into action. That's how the Bangladeshis got into action. That's how they came to Pakistan to negotiate so that Pakistan could play this match."

Mohsin Naqvi makes u-turn after demands are met

The current president of the PCB, Mohsin Naqvi, agreed to play against India after the demands made by them, after they secured justice from the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Bangladesh was ousted from the major event after it refused to travel to India, citing security reasons. PCB felt injustice towards BCB and the players. This was the reason for PCB not to play against India to showcase solidarity.

The ICC will not implement any sanctions against the BCB, and they will be getting their full revenue from the apex body’s annual income. There will also be a global tournament organised by the ICC to compensate for the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, which was shifted to the United Arab Emirates, citing security turmoil in Bangladesh, and also playing some compensation to them.

ICC and Bangladesh on good terms?

Najam Sethi concluded, saying, "And I think one of the reasons that Pakistan gave a 15-day notice was that they wanted space with which to talk to the ICC and Bangladesh. And I think they had reason to believe that that would yield some results. And so I think the ICC has decided to back off a little bit, give Bangladesh some space."

"And I think Pakistan has achieved part of its objective, which was to get Bangladesh back in the game in one way or another, because the ICC was threatening them with all manner of sanctions. Pakistan knew that the broadcasters had the ICC, as it were, on a cold slab."

However, now the India vs Pakistan match is on, and the blockbuster clash will once again gain double the revenue than any other games for the major event. India is on a 5 match winning streak against the Men in Green across all competitions.
