The Women’s Asia Cup 2026 final ended with another trophy controversy involving India and Mohsin Naqvi, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman and Pakistan’s Interior Minister. After India’s 72-run win over Sri Lanka, Harmanpreet Kaur and her team refused to take the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, following the stand taken by Suryakumar Yadav’s team in last year’s men’s final.
The drama did not come as a surprise to Naqvi. According to a report by Pakistan media outlet Geo News, the ACC chairman had already been informed about India’s decision before the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 final but still refused to change his stand. India already informed about the decision, but Mohsin Naqvi refuses to budge
The report claimed that Naqvi was determined to present the trophy himself despite knowing that India did not want to receive it from him. The PCB chairman’s stand led to a delay of around 90 minutes, and India eventually left without collecting the trophy.
While India's women’s national cricket team did not collect the trophy, Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu accepted the runners-up prize-money cheque and medals from Naqvi.
The ACC has reportedly made it clear that the trophy remains available for the Indian team to collect, but they can only receive it from Naqvi.
The report quoted an ACC source as saying, "The trophy Mohsin Naqvi refuses to budge after India Women’s Asia Cup 2026 trophy snub is available to the winning Indian team. The report further added that even the Men's Asia Cup 2025 trophy is available for collection. Our position has not changed.”
BCCI still rejects Mohsin Naqvi's trophy conditions
The Asia Cup trophy dispute is not new. After last year’s Men’s Asia Cup controversy, Naqvi reportedly held several discussions with the BCCI over the issue.
He had reportedly offered India the option of collecting the trophy from his office, but only if a special felicitation ceremony was organized and he personally handed the trophy to the Indian team.
Later, Naqvi was also reported to have softened his demand. However, the condition still required Suryakumar Yadav to personally visit his office and collect the trophy.
The BCCI has continued to reject these demands. And now the fresh reports claimed that Naqvi’s stand is still the same. Amid this, PM Narendra Modi congratulates India for winning Women's Asia Cup 2026.
BCCI stands firm on Mohsin Naqvi row as Amol Muzumdar reveals India’s stand
Meanwhile, India women’s national cricket team head coach Amol Muzumdar revealed that the decision not to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi was made by the BCCI.
Muzumdar said at the post-match press conference, "That stand has been taken by BCCI, and we stand by it. For us, this tournament is over; we are the champions. That's good enough. It was on the big board that India is the champion of the Asia Cup 2026. This tournament is officially over for us. We're happy that we're the champions and we look forward to the Asian Games.”
Since tensions between India and Pakistan increased in May 2025, Indian players have avoided handshakes with Pakistan’s players and officials. The same stand continued last year with the men’s team and again this year with the women’s team across the multi-nation events.
