PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi's concern has been growing amid the ongoing tensions in the Pakistan Super League, with the hotel security issues and ball-tampering incident escalating to a major fiasco.
The Pakistan Super League has entered its 11th edition of the competition, and now it has elevated its level with the addition of two more teams. This PSL season is also not normal like the former seasons played under the PCB.
The PCB limited the Pakistan Super League matches to only two venues across the nation, that is, the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and the Karachi National Stadium. The matches in Lahore are also held without any spectators, despite which multiple controversies arose in quick succession.
PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi is upset about the ongoing tensions in the PSL
The Mohsin Naqvi-led PCB had taken some stern measures on the conduct of the PSL in 2026, after the fuel crisis and the travel issues rose in Pakistan, linking them to the West Asian crisis. The PCB had put measures in place to manage the mega event.
The PSL started with limited venues and restricted crowds; hence, fans were asked to watch the game from home. The two biggest challenges for the board have surfaced in recent times, and these include the ball-tampering allegations and the hotel security breach.
PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi is reportedly concerned over the multiple issues around the PSL, with reports suggesting the PCB chief is specifically upset over these two incidents.
A PCB source was quoted by news agency PTI as saying: "(PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi is not happy in particular about the hotel incident since the PCB is taking great care to ensure the event is held without an incident and has even disallowed spectators for the league matches at the Gaddafi stadium for the time being."
What happened that led to the Hotel-Security misconduct issue?
All the issues that have surfaced in recent times have surrounded the Lahore Qalandars' side, who are the defending champions of the competition. The infamous hotel security breach had surfaced earlier involving two Lahore Qalandar players.
Shaheen Afridi, the Pakistan and Lahore Qalandars skipper, and Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza were accused of allowing guests to their team hotel rooms in Lahore, which was against the hotel's regulations. Reportedly, they allowed them despite the objections from security and staff.
This incident raised a massive question over the discipline and arrangements in a tournament where security was a key focus. The PCB then went on to say that the concern extends beyond a single match.
“The board is unhappy about the PSL gaining traction for the wrong reasons, starting with the incident of the ball colour turning pink during the first match of the league,” the source added, as cited by news agency PTI.
Fakhar Zaman denied the ball-tampering allegations to the PSL committee
Another major incident that occurred during the ongoing edition of the PSL includes pressure building on the board after a ball-tampering controversy escalated during the match between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings.
Just before the final over of the match, the Karachi Kings needed 14 runs and asked the umpire for a ball check. They were then found guilty of the change in the balls' shape and configuration. Eventually, the target was reduced to 9 runs, and Karachi went on to win the match following the 5-run penalty.
The matter later escalated, and Lahore batter Fakhar Zaman was charged with a Level 3 offence under the PSL Code of Conduct for having altered the ball's configuration. Fakhar denied the charge in a hearing with match referee Roshan Mahanama. Even Shaheen Afridi claimed that the team management would review the incident and distanced himself from the controversy.
