India is likely to announce the squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan, which also includes one Test match and three ODI matches. The BCCI secretary has revealed the dates for the announcement of the squad for the upcoming series.

The Indian team has been exceptionally successful in white-ball formats under head coach Gautam Gambhir; however, they have struggled against major sides like Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, especially in the longest format of the game.

India, over the past two years, has lost three Test series, while also having faced two defeats at home. India faced a clean sweep against the likes of New Zealand and South Africa in a home Test series in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

Afghanistan has been successful across the two formats of white-ball cricket. Afghanistan was the semi-finalist of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup and also played some quality cricket in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. They have also had promising success in the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India.

Afghanistan's tour of India has been slotted right after the IPL ends. It starts with the one-off Test between the two sides at the PCA New Cricket Stadium in New Mullanpur in Chandigarh. The match is scheduled to start on the 6th of June. This match would not be part of the ICC World Test Championship schedule for India.

After the end of the Test match on the 10th of June, India will host them for a three-match ODI series, which kicks off the preparations for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. The three matches are scheduled to be played on the 14th, 17th, and 20th of June in Dharamshala, Lucknow, and Chennai, respectively.

Who are the likely players to be included in India's Test and ODI setup?

Not only will stars like Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma be seen in action, but several youngsters might be picked for this home series before India makes their way to England for a long white-ball series.

After a promising IPL season, the likes of Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi might be backed for a spot in the Indian Test side while also being considered for a backup in the 50-over format.

Especially pace bowlers will look to impress the selectors, as they have performed pretty well this season. Mohammed Shami to Anshul Kamboj, Kartik Tyagi to Prince Yadav, all these seamers have shown some remarkable consistency and pace, making them a promising choice in the XI.
