Moises Henriques has already announced his retirement from the Australia National Cricket Team. He called it an end to his time with the Aussie side last month. Now he has found a new destination in Europe, as he will represent the Portugal National Cricket Team and has been named the captain of the side as well for T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C.
Moises Henriques has been one of the famous names in Australian cricket and also in franchise cricket as well. He has been a household name in the Big Bash League (BBL). Now with leaving Australia, he will have an opportunity to represent the country he was born in as they attempt to qualify for the T20 World Cup for the first time.
Moises Henriques career record
Moises Henriques has played four Tests, 16 ODIs and 24 T20Is for the Kangaroos. He represented the Sydney Sixers in the BBL and also led the team in a record 129 matches across his 15 seasons with the club before retiring from Australian domestic cricket in July 2026. He won back-to-back titles with the Sixers in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.
Moises Henriques made his international debut in a T20I game against New Zealand in Sydney on 15 February 2009. He went on to play 24 games after that, scoring 355 runs for the Aussies, with an average of 20.88. In bowling, he picked up just 7 wickets in the shorter format of the game. He also did not have the best of ODI and Test records as well.
Will Portugal qualify for the T20 World Cup 2028?
The European Qualifiers are scheduled to be played from August 14 to 21 in Finland. They have been drawn in Group B, where they will face Israel, Germany, Greece, and Czechia. The group winner will play against the winner of Group A in the final on August 21 at Finland's Kerava National Cricket Ground.
If they win the group stage, it will allow Portugal to advance to the European regional final. The overall qualifier winner will join Scotland, Jersey, and Denmark at that level, while the top two teams from the regional finals will advance to the global qualifier for the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Moises Henriques set for ETPL debut
The 39-year-old all-rounder was born in Madeira, the Portuguese island which is also the birthplace of the famous footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. So after he was born, his family relocated to Australia, where he started playing his age-group cricket.
Henriques will also be featuring in the inaugural season of the European T20 Premier League as he has been contracted by Glasgow Cosmic. This is a great opportunity to bring European culture into cricket.
