Former Indian batter and current Shibpur MLA Manoj Tiwary has stunned the cricket world by questioning the long-standing “Captain Cool” tag of legendary Indian cricketer MS Dhoni. MS Dhoni earned the nickname “Captain Cool” for staying calm and collected even in the most intense moments on the field.

No matter how tense a match gets, the former Indian captain thinks clearly, makes smart decisions, and leads his team with steady confidence under pressure. However, targeting Dhoni’s Captain Cool tag, Tiwary said that his calmness doesn’t stay in the high-pressure world of the IPL.

Manoj Tiwary says MS Dhoni’s ‘Captain Cool’ tag doesn’t hold in IPL

The former cricketer-turned commentator pointed out that Dhoni is often composed, but there are moments where the pressure gets to him, moments that were visible in the heated on-field confrontations and occasional strategic disagreements during the IPL.

Tiwary said that several captains were also cool, like Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin, as he downplayed Dhoni’s calm persona and the tag given by the fans and cricket pundits. He also noted that the so-called “Captain Cool” is just a word.

Manoj Tiwary was quoted as saying by ANI: “Leave aside the Captain Cool tag. In my opinion, the tag was there for a while. But when it comes to IPL, the tag doesn't exist. These are just words. We have seen many captains before him. We have seen Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin before him.”

Manoj Tiwary recalls MS Dhoni’s rare anger as proof against ‘Captain Cool’ tag

Tiwary, the Minister of State for Affairs of Sports and Youth in Bengal, has recalled one of the most talked-about incidents in IPL history when the legendary wicketkeeper lost his cool on the umpire. It was the incident from an IPL 2019 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals, where a controversial no-ball call was reversed.

A controversial no-ball call was reversed, triggering an intense reaction from Dhoni. The usually composed CSK skipper stormed onto the field from the dugout and had a fiery confrontation with the match officials. Even Dhoni was fined 50% of the match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.

The former Indian batter further added, “In one IPL match, Dhoni went inside the ground to argue with the umpire. There are many instances where the Captain Cool tag has not been followed. But people have given this tag to him; that’s fine. He is mostly cool, but not completely. And I feel his experience will only work if the players are able to accept it.”

Can BCCI even reach MS Dhoni for a mentor role?

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly approached MS Dhoni with an offer to mentor the Indian cricket team in a mentorship role, given his tactical brain and his unmatched experience in handling the big tournaments.

Reacting to the rumours, Manoj Tiwary took a sharp dig at Dhoni by questioning whether Dhoni would even respond to the BCCI’s call. He signed off by saying, “Did he pick up the phone? Because it is difficult to reach him on the phone. Replies to messages from him are also very rare; many players have said this. Will he read the message or not? We don’t know.”
