Former Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra has shared his thoughts on whether the legendary MS Dhoni should retire from the Indian Premier League (IPL). There is still no clarity on Dhoni’s future in the IPL after he handed over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad in the IPL 2024.

Dhoni, one of the most successful captains the game has ever seen and one of the all-time greatest wicketkeepers left his fans and the cricket world in suspense over his IPL future after CSK failed to qualify for the knockouts of the IPL 2024 under Gaikwad’s captaincy.

Amit Mishra predicts MS Dhoni's return for IPL 2025

He was in great form this season, but still, he played at numbers 8 and 9 for CSK in the tournament, which left the world puzzled about his return for another season in 2025. However, Mishra is confident that the former CSK skipper will play in the IPL 2025.

The former spinner said that Dhoni is a legendary figure in the CSK team, and his association with the franchise with the franchise will last for years. Given that Mishra said that Dhoni may return as player-cum-mentor for CSK in the next IPL 2025, he will definitely play one more season before retiring from the game.

Mishra said that Dhoni will form a core team for CSK before retiring from the IPL, although he will stay with the team in any capacity even after calling time on his career. He reiterated that the former Indian captain will definitely play as a player in the upcoming IPL 2025.

MS Dhoni will prepare a core team for CSK: Amit Mishra

Amit Mishra said on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast on YouTube: “MS Dhoni is not retiring because he is a very big name in the CSK team, a very big thing, and a lot of things are associated with him, so I believe that he will definitely be with the team as a player next year. Maybe he does not play all the matches, even if he will be with the team as a player-cum-mentor, but he will definitely play in the IPL 2025. He will prepare a core team for CSK, but it is certain that he will be associated with Chennai in any capacity.

But I think Dhoni will definitely play in the IPL 2025 as a player, because being with CSK next year means that you are preparing for the next two years. During this time, they will prepare their core team and their captain, and if something goes up or down, then they can make changes. After playing in the IPL 2025, Dhoni can announce his retirement from the IPL.”

On the same podcast, Mishra accused Dhoni and Virat Kohli of destroying his international career. He played under Kohli and Dhoni’s captaincy, but neither of them gave him a longer rope, as he finished his career with 156 international wickets in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is. He even called the current Indian captain Rohit Sharma his favorite player, ignoring Dhoni.
