The struggles continue for Chennai Super Kings even under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in the ongoing IPL 2025, as they suffered yet another home defeat, leaving fans at Chepauk Stadium disappointed once again. Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off a sensational five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in their IPL 2025 clash on April 25 to make a late comeback in the tournament.

Well, the pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium was slow and tricky, but it was CSK’s weak batting that proved costly against the SRH. Even after making three changes to their playing XI, the team couldn’t find the spark they needed.

CSK's IPL 2025 Playoff hopes are almost over as they suffer another home defeat

Sam Curran returned to replace Jamie Overton, Dewald Brevis got a chance ahead of Rachin Ravindra, and Deepak Hooda came in for Vijay Shankar.

But these changes could not help CSK as they crumbled under pressure, posting a below-par total of 154 runs on the board against the SRH despite the dew helping batters later in the evening at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

It was Chennai’s seventh loss of their nine games so far this season. Notably, Chennai Super Kings have tried 21 different players from their squad of 25, but they are still searching for the right combination. However, their chances of reaching the IPL 2025 playoffs are almost finished. They have managed to win only two games so far in the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Super Kings captain and wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni, who was visibly disappointed after losing the fourth game at Chepauk, didn’t sugarcoat the team’s problems when asked about the poor run in the ongoing season.

MS Dhoni defends CSK's constant chopping and changing in Playing XI amid IPL 2025 struggles

The five-time IPL title-winning captain admitted that CSK’s biggest issue this season is that too many players are underperforming. He said that it is tough to keep backing the same team when multiple players aren’t delivering, so making changes becomes the only option to try to win games.

MS Dhoni said at the post-match presentation, “In a tournament like this, if you have just one or two areas to plug, it's manageable. But if the majority of your players aren't performing, it becomes very difficult. You can make a few changes here and there, but if most players are doing well, you can afford to give them a few more games.

If that doesn't work, you move on. But if four players are underperforming at the same time, you're forced to make changes—you can't just keep going with the same team.”

MS Dhoni criticizes Chennai Super Kings' batting failures

Dhoni has openly blamed the batters for CSK’s overwhelming IPL 2025 campaign.

Speaking about CSK’s batting this season, Dhoni noted, “We kept losing wickets. In the first innings, the wicket was slightly better, and 155 is not a justifiable score. It wasn't turning much. Yes, after the eighth or tenth over, it became a bit too paced for the pacers, but nothing too dramatic. I feel we could have added a few more runs.”

He signed off by saying, “We're just not putting enough runs on the board, and that's essential these days. The game has evolved. I'm not saying you always need 180 or 200, but you have to assess conditions and then look to put up a competitive total.”
