Amidst the intense debate on when cricket legends should hang up their boots, former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has shared his surprising take.

There has been a lot of debate on whether MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma should continue playing in the IPL and India, respectively, given their fitness and poor performances according to their stature.

While Virat Kohli has silenced critics with strong performances in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and his numbers in the ongoing IPL 2025 are not that bad, the spotlight remains on Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020.

MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma's struggle continues in IPL 2025

At 43, Dhoni is clearly past his peak, struggling to finish games for the Chennai Super Kings this season. Dhoni has amassed 105 runs in five games as CSK has already lost four games on the trot, while Kohli has managed 164 runs in four games so far in the ongoing IPL 2025.

On the other hand, the 38-year-old Rohit Sharma has also been underwhelming for the Mumbai Indians with a string of low scores of 0, 8, 13, and 17 in the tournament. Apart from their numbers, the age is something fans and cricket experts have been highlighting while speculating on their future.

Well, Moeen Ali, who is currently representing Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing IPL 2025, believes that the senior players need to seriously reflect on their impact. However, he stressed that if a player still has the hunger and ability, there's no need to retire just because of age.

Moeen Ali fires an indirect shot at MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma

The English all-rounder has taken an indirect dig at MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, suggesting that players shouldn’t continue playing just because of their big names or massive fan followings. He stressed that players must think beyond personal milestones and make space for someone else if they are struggling and are not fit in the team's needs.

Moeen Ali was quoted as saying by The Indian Express: “I definitely think you shouldn’t just hold on because you’re a big name or you have a massive following. And it should never be your own personal goals. Don't just hold on for the sake of holding on in a selfish way. Just be a bit more realistic and think, is it worth me holding on? Have I got more to give to the team? If the team wants to go in a new direction, I think you should allow that to happen.”

'You should be a bit more realistic and honest with yourself'

Taking a sharp swipe at his former CSK teammate, the KKR star suggested that senior stars should step back if younger players are performing better. He believes that brand and experience shouldn't be an excuse to stay on when form is dipping, suggesting that the seniors be honest with themselves.

Moeen signed off by saying, “If you're not performing and you're at that age where you're a bit older and younger players are coming through and they're probably playing better than you right now. It doesn't mean they're better than you now, but they’re playing better than you. Then you should be a bit more realistic and honest with yourself.”
