There is widespread speculation regarding MS Dhoni's future as a cricketer. The former India skipper will turn 44 in July this year, and many believe that his days as a cricketer are numbered.
MS Dhoni's retirement has been the talk of the town for quite some time now. The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman last played international cricket in 2019 before announcing his retirement in 2020. He has been playing only in the IPL since then. Many believed that he would retire immediately after the 2020 IPL season.
However, MS Dhoni has continued proving everyone wrong. Even after leading Chennai Super Kings to the title in 2023, he decided against hanging up his boots. In 2024, the Chennai Super Kings star stepped down as the captain of the franchise but has continued plying his trade for the team.

MS Dhoni drops a hint on retirement?
Will MS Dhoni play in the IPL next year? This is the question that is doing the rounds in the cricketing fraternity once again. As he walked out for toss on Sunday (May 25) for CSK's last game of the season, Ravi Shastri asked him about his body and how he has managed to play in the IPL for 18 long years.
In reply, the CSK captain hinted that his retirement might not be far off, admitting that his body is increasingly becoming difficult to manage.
"It's (his body) surviving. Every year is a new challenge. It needs a lot of maintenance. Didn't trouble me enough when I was playing international cricket," said MS Dhoni.

A recent report also suggested that Dhoni was all set to retire midway through the tournament. This was reportedly the reason his parents attended CSK's match against the Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 5. However, Dhoni eventually decided against it after regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered a season-ending injury.
Dhoni has been troubled by his problematic knee for years now. He had to undergo surgery on the knee immediately after the 2023 season. Reports state that his knee is also the main reason he does not bat higher in the order.
Recently, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan reiterated that the franchise has given Dhoni the freedom to take the final call on his future as a player.
"It’s his call, we will never tell him anything. If he takes a decision, he will inform us. He hasn’t told us anything," Viswanathan told RevSportz.
With CSK set to go through a transition and the franchise is likely to acquire more young players, it won't be surprising if the ongoing season turns out to be Dhoni's last IPL season.
