Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has strongly criticized MS Dhoni for his slow performances for the Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing IPL 2025. After CSK suffered its third loss in a row, Tiwary suggested that the legendary wicketkeeper should have retired after leading the franchise to the IPL title in 2023.
His comments came after Dhoni’s slow-paced innings in Chennai Super Kings’ 25-run loss to Delhi Capitals in the ongoing IPL 2025 on Saturday, April 5. The former India and CSK captain came in to bat at number 7 and scored an unbeaten 30 runs from 26 balls, including just one six and a four.

However, Dhoni built an 84-run partnership with Vijay Shankar for the sixth wicket, but Chennai Super Kings still fell short by 25 runs while chasing 184 runs against Delhi Capitals in the 17th match of the ongoing IPL 2025 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

This marked CSK’s third defeat in four games and their second consecutive loss at home after RCB hammered them for the first time since 2008.
After their embarrassing loss to DC, Manjo Tiwary expressed disappointment over how Dhoni’s impact on the game has been fading in recent seasons.
MS Dhoni should have retired after winning IPL 2023: Manoj Tiwary
Manoj Tiwary said on Cricbuzz, “Forgive me if I'm being a little strict here. He should have retired after the 2023 IPL; it was his best time. With all the respect he has earned over the years, fans have not been able to see him in the last two years, and he is getting lost. Look at how the Chennai fans are reacting, coming out on the roads and giving those interviews.”
The former batter-turned-commentator felt that Dhoni should have stepped away on a high after leading CSK to IPL 2023 triumph, instead of continuing when things hadn’t been going well for him or the team. Tiwary also questioned the logic behind limiting Dhoni's role, especially considering his full-time presence on the field for more than 20 overs as a wicketkeeper.

He expressed surprise at Chennai's different approach to Dhoni's physical efforts while fielding and his cautious approach to batting. He also noted that it’s now up to the CSK management to step in and make a tough but necessary call for the team’s future in the tournament.
Tiwary signed off by saying, “He is making the effort. Stephen Fleming also said Dhoni cannot bat more than 10 overs. But I can't understand, when you can field for more than 20 overs, where you have to sit up and down, dive to take catches, and make runouts, then your knee doesn't hurt, but when it comes to helping the team win, you talk about 10 overs."
"All the decisions are being taken around him, but nothing is working for the team. I feel they should take a strong call and make him understand that it's not working and that he should leave.”
Notably, CSK will next face PBKS in their IPL 2025 game on April 8 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur.
